  • Tyre Nichols

What I find most mystifying about this atrocity is motive. These cops surely understood that their body cams would confirm their guilt in the assault and this did not deter them.

Is it likely that Tyre's ostentatious photography pursuit in public spaces and interest in law enforcement led the Scorpion team to believe he had evidence that would incriminate them for an even larger set of crimes and premeditated the attack to shut him up?

Any explanation has to explain why this inoffensive guy was singled out by not 1 but by 5 cops to actively engage in criminal assault on camera.

It looks like the media discussion isn't ready to speculate much on motive yet but surely this had to be premeditated?

They're charged w/2nd degree murder (plus aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression), which suggests a lack of evidence for any premeditation.

Interesting that we get near-immediate bodycam footage and serious blanket charges when the bad-apple cops aren't white...

Let's not try and make all Police Brutality about race. Let's also remember that Memphis' Police Chief is a Black Female.

Memphis is a majority black city and has many many echoes of racial oppression and many current examples of racial disparity, but this instance was a group of rouge cops with a record of complaints using their position to take out their anger on an innocent civilian. Had that civilian been white then there probably would have been a different outcome. This is where the issue of race should come up. The cops being fired and charged quickly was the proper response regardless of the cops' race. I give credit to the police chief for a speedy and correct response.

If we want to talk about race, then let's talk about why this kind of thing keeps happening to young black men.

Chief Cerelyn Davis, who created the (originally 40-member) SCORPION unit in 2021, was previously head cop in Durham NC. Prior to that, she started her career in Atlanta, where she headed the notorious REDDOG tactical unit around 2011. I doubt there is any coincidence in the fact that she created Scorpion, and that it suffered the same reputation for aggressive violence that caused Atlanta to decommission Red Dog about 10 years ago.

I knew about her employment history but I did not know about the Red Dog. Hmmm....Houston, Memphis has a problem. Thanks Jrabbit.

These kind of stops were apparently random by this misguided unit. Here is the story of Cornell McKinney who was randomly stopped and yanked from his car by these same officers just days before they murdered Tyre Nichols.

The overriding question here is why Memphis PD internal affairs never responded to his complaint. If they had, could Tyre be alive today?

The cycle of violence continues. Particular notice to this: "An officer told that person to be still or the officer would “pop him again.”"...apparently directed at the dead shooter who did not want to take off his "skull cap."

This city is on edge. The MPD is running commercials offering $15,000 sign on bonuses to potential recruits and not getting many takers. Well over 200 murders last year. A majority of Citizens don't feel safe and don't trust the Police. Add to that, Tennessee now has an open carry law for firearms. Memphis is bordering on needing some type of outside intervention but won't get it because it is a majority black city. This is pitiful.

What I did see of the video sickened me. I usually come to the defense of officers, but there was very little, if anything, I saw that even had an ounce of justification.

Same. I watched every minute of them the night they came out. Those people may have worn a uniform but there were not cops. They were thugs and deserve every bit of justice the system can deal them. My next door neighbor is a Memphis cop. He was horrified just as much as anybody. I still believe that most cops genuinely try and do their jobs, but people like those thugs give it all a bad name.

Jrabbit, I think, hit the nail on the head. This looks very much like a twofold nightmare...rogue cops and bad leadership. Memphis deserves better...the whole country deserves better.

Just in case anyone is keeping up. We are up to 7 cops fired and 2 EMTs fired. City has applied to the state to have the cops decertified and the EMTs to lose their licenses. Several more cops are under investigation.

I'd been praying that the next time cops murdered a black guy, they'd kill someone more presentable. Bad-mouthing George Floyd is recondite scumbaggery, but he butt-ugly and I don't wanna see him no more.

Think about what you're saying Geronimo "What I find most mystifying about this atrocity is motive. These cops surely understood that their body cams would confirm their guilt in the assault and this did not deter them."

"people" who fail to pull over... run from the police... resist arrest - surely understand they will not get away, and yet this does not deter them. I think i't's more the failure of the 'person' than the action. in this case it was a group of 'people' who were failures.
