I wonder why Britain hasn't tried to create a free trade block with the commonwealth. I wonder why the US and Britain don't have a free trade pact. Why are these so hard to create. Why do things like CETA take so enormously long to negotiate? Why can't the EU have free trade and still respect sovereignty?

Are you saying that commonwealth countries manipulate currency exchange rates, engage in unfair trade practices, and steal technology from Great Britain? Or that they are economic competitors competing for the same markets? What similarities are you referencing?

Commonwealth and former Empire countries don't tend to have alignment. Take India, which would be far the largest market for a trade deal for the UK - condition of a trade deal is to open the UK up to almost unfettered visa access for study and work for people from India. Not the I am saying the UK is racist or anti-immigration, but there is no chance in hell of that being politically acceptable. Hence no deal. Similar issues with other countries and trade deals.

On the question of "Why can't the EU have free trade and still respect sovereignty?". Not sure if I am stating what you already know (apologies if I am). The main issue with the EU trading bloc is that it is necessarily a custom union and so agreements can't be struck by individual countries without undermining the whole set up. The regime only works if you have a united foreign trade policy or tariff/regulatory regime. If France imported anything it like through a unilateral trade deal, you could end up having sub-standard or untaxed goods making their way throughout the EU - to counter this you would have to put up custom borders with France to inspect all goods for origin, and then potentially to assess for quality or tax duties owing. Defeating the point of the Customs Union.

The EU is a bit more than a customs union though.

[Edit:] even custom unions usually have rules on what can be unilaterally imported by members, especially if there are no internal customs controls.

I've got Mercosur as an example, it's not a full customs union, and there are still customs controls between the members; members are generally free to make outside deals, but there are rules as to what can be considered 'local' goods for the differentiated tariffs.
