  • The reason why we got Russiagate - aside from Hillary and Podesta and the brain trust over at the DNC - was because someone leaked emails showing Hillary stealing the election from Bernie. But instead of that becoming the news story, the Clinton campaign and allied media pushed the Manchurian Candidate lie to distract from their corruption.

I think the GOP is up to 217 with 1 to go for control of the House. I wonder if we'll be hearing about how democracy was saved as the GOP starts investigating the Democrats.

    • It was still a Republican win though a much smaller win than they thought.

I think overturning Roe is why

    • Divided Government may be the best thing in the age of extremism on both sides of the aisle.

      • I agree Plato. The only problem is one side refuses to compromise when not in power. This results in either nothing getting done or massive amounts of executive orders, which feel sort of despotic as they are not voted or negotiated. Both are clearly guilty of this.

I agree that executive orders are out of control (and probably have been since Reagan), but I am not so sure that gridlock is a bad thing. It seems that most mundane items get pushed through with no fanfare or press coverage. It is only the Partisan battles that draw attention. If we have gridlock in Partisanship, that may actually be helpful.

          • sadly far too much power is invested in the speaker, they get to control what comes up for votes when I think any member should be able to bring possible legislation to the floor for a vote

Congress hasn't been able to timely and fully pass a budget in 25 years.

              • Looks like the Republicans are ready to focus on the important things like Hunter Biden's laptop and the Department of Justice:

good, their only reason for existing at this point is to investigate govt corruption and if they dont because they're corrupt too, then Trump and/or his base had better make it so

and it would really help if small d democrats and progs supported those investigations

                • Before he was impeached for pressuring Ukraine into investigating Biden family connections to Burisma and a prosecutor, senate Democrats pressured Ukraine to investigate Trump. Yeah, they did... And guess what? Trump was innocent and the Biden family got millions from Burisma and Burisma wanted the prosecutor fired. Yeah, they did...

                  • Bill Maher's new rules was devoted to gratitude for the Democrat's great victory saving democracy from the darkness

Democrats lost the House and the popular vote by ~3 million votes

Bill followed that up criticizing GOP election denialism... after years of Democrats telling us Trump and Putin stole the '16 election

I wonder what would happen if several freedom caucus members refused to support him. Can the speaker be elected with less than 218 and if so, could a Democrat win at least in theory? I'm sure the dissident Republicans would eventually support him if it came down to it, but I sure would be using my leverage to get concessions.

                      • I think that things continue until someone gets 218.

If there is no one that 218 Republicans can agree upon within congress, I have wondered if there is someone that 218 Republicans and Democrats could agree to. In a dream world they could pick someone like Justin Amash or even Jaime Beutler.

I don't see any Republican representative supporting a Democratic representative. Or visa versa to be honest.

                        • that issue came up with the Democrat's vote making Pelosi speaker, the progressive base was pissed at the Prog caucus for not using their leverage for a vote on med4all... It was argued by some of Pelosi's supporters if they didn't vote for her McCarthy could win even if he didn't get to 218
