Similarly Rydz-Smigly distinguished himself in the 1920 war against the USSR and put up a competent defence of Poland in World war 2 but it seems Josif Pilsudski was right to say he would not be suited to command the defence of a nation.
    I would include them.

I think you have to include Montgomery, Patton, Bradley and Rommel. These comments are all reasons to hurt...

Prince Louis fought with the French Foreign Legion and then was captured by the Germans trying to join de Gaulle in London. Upon release he joined the resistance and was fighting the Germans again in 1944. After the war he lived in exile in Switzerland until allowed to permanently reside in France. He died in 1996 and did not make his son the new pretender but rather his grandson, Prince Jean-Christophe.

His wiki says he fought with distinction, but it doesn't note that he was an officer of any note.

            Gen. Sun Li-jen (Chinese)

He was mostly a division commander during WW2 but became a general by the end of the war. He was known as "Rommel of the East" and later Commander of Chief of the Republic of China Army.

Perhaps somebody else may care to select generals and start the thrade?

Another contender would be Emil Mannerheim who commanded the forces of Finland in their war against the Soviets.
