Did eastern Ukrainians defend themselves from Russia in 2014-5? No, they were being attacked by Kiev's army so they asked for Russia's help. Ofc Putin responded, the Russian people wanted him to defend their brethren.

Except that Russia started hostilities by sending green men to Crimea, seizing control, then annexxing it. Russian "volunteer" forces also participated on the side of the so-called separatists in Donbas, there's plenty of evidence. And those "separatists", as we see now, were not at all about autonomy, separatism or even independence - they were just a means to carve out pieces of Ukraine that Putin liked to have for a variety of reasons.

It's incredibly important that neither Donbas independence, including any part of the Donbas, nor Donbas accession to Russia were on the ballot Berz.

They voted to federalize Ukraine and the entire ballot was about greater autonomy. Their intent was clear long before Azov started shelling them.

I utterly and completely laugh at the idiotic ideo that 90% voted to join Russia. The Russians literally went around armed with guns telling people they had to vote for annexation. What type of moron thinks that is a fair vote?

The USSR was dissolving and Gorbachev offered a new deal and the various member states voted on it, Crimea agreed to the deal if they regained their status as a republic. Apparently Oblasts have less power within the old union. Crimea was home to the Russian Black Sea fleet, much of the population were employed or on pensions and they did not want to lose that with independence. Much of the resistance to Maidan came from retirees who feared losing money.

Gorbachev's effort failed so Crimea voted 54% to join Ukraine. A few years later both Crimea and Donbas overwhelmingly voted for more autonomy. So since Polytubbies seemed to have missed it, pro-Russian demonstrations have been taking place in Moldova (that bit between Ukraine and Romania). Moldova used to have Black Sea ports, and after being rejected by Romania and Ukraine as 'partners' (Moldava is a basket case), seems to see this as a chance to ingratiate itself by opening some sort of western front, and maybe capturing a port or two.

Of course, Romania would probably be pulled in if a conflict occures.And this would give Putin the excuse he needs..

Some fun facts about this - these demonstrations are made of a Moldovian party that has some 5% votes in the country, the leader of the party is an oligarch probably financed by russia - he has apparently committed serious crimes and have fled the country. Those left behind are being investigated for russian money financing these "demonstrations". Moldova may probably not be on the top of becoming an EU member, but I think the large majority of the country would prefer that over some nefarious russian connection.
