What would anyone in Quebec call the province’s famous dish of French fries and cheese curds topped with gravy?
Don’t call it a poutine if you’re down at Le Roy Jucep in Drummondville – at least not for the next little while.
The self-proclaimed inventor of the poutine, Le Roy Jucep is doing its part to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
In a now-deleted Facebook post, the restaurant about 107 km southeast of Montreal decided to remove the word poutine from its name on social media to “express, in its own way, its profound dismay faced with the situation in Ukraine.”
And it’s all because of a phonetic peculiarity regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s name when translated into French.
Francophones spell his name as “Poutine,” not Putin, because pronouncing his name as it is commonly spelled sounds very close to a common French curse word.
The restaurant owner says the post was removed because of the negative feedback received.
But the restaurant’s Facebook page still calls itself the inventor of the “fries cheese sauce” – not the poutine. Le Roy Jucep claims to have invented poutine in the 1950s. It is indeed a famous spot that’s seen many politicians stop by, including Justin Trudeau.
Restaurant overwhelmed by post’s attention
CityNews reached out to the restaurant and spoke to management over the phone. They said they were overwhelmed by the situation and attention since the post and couldn’t provide any further comment.
Despite some negative reaction, others on social media were quite supportive of the gesture.
“Bravo! Nice show of support, we love you! Proud to be from Drummondville!” wrote Sébastien Organde on Facebook.
Added Anne-Marie Duquette in a comment: “For all those who say this would have no effect: empathy and solidarity is not noting.”
It seems Le Roy Jucep’s move attracted attention all the way in Ukraine.
On Saturday, the restaurant shared a Radio-Canada interview on its Facebook page in which a Ukrainian woman acknowledges the diner’s actions.
“Very touching to learn that our small message of support travelled all the way from Drummondville to Ukraine,” Le Roy Jucep wrote.
“We managed to make someone smile over there, that’s a small victory.
“Our heart is with you.”I am not delusional! Now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go dance with the purple wombat who's playing show-tunes in my coffee cup!

intellectual Russians are fleeing Russia by the thousands,

of course I give them the benefit of a doubt.
we're talking about someone who openly with a spray had painted a Z on her bag and was walching around
To me that was equivalent to have an SS member in front of me. I don't care if they are misled, did she really think she could pull this through?
that's insane.
also sorry for being drunk and acting like a jerk. that is the 2nd time I broke my promise. Let's hope I don't go down the rabbit hole because not only is it degrading it is also very painful

Indeed I am truthful
Do you condemn russia?
b ut would you codemnt USA \?
They did the same in Iraq
How can you accuse me of double standards, that's insane
The USA invasion of Iraq was illegal, I've never been in favor of it, and I think Bush and Cheney should be tried (but nobody who makes these decisions seems to have asked me for my opinion unfortunately). But at least they didn't start off with the intention to annex Iraq or parts of it, and didn't purposefully shell urban areas, mine and shell humanitarian corridors, intentionally target hospitals and journalists, and a long list of etceteras that Russia has been verifyably doing (never mind all the other which we still don't have definite proof of). Russia is now laying mines on the outskirts of Kiyv.
The USA has a lot of downsides, but at least half of the people there seem to be in favor of rule of law and human rights (let's hope the democrats win the next elections though, I shiver to think how all this would have transpired if Trump had won).
Also, not having a free press does not absolve Serb. He's young, intelligent, and (at least until last month) had pretty much full access to the internet. I refuse to cut him some slack, just as I won't to anyone who thinks climate change is a hoax or who thinks some people deserve less rights than others.
(Incidentally, I would also not chose to live in the USA. When chosing where to relocate, I would have gotten a higher salary if I had transferred to the US, but I much preferred coming to Europe.)Indifference is Bliss

Pfff, I know some venomous snake or other is holding you at fangpoint forcing you to type that, in order to lure in more fresh meat.
(More seriously, the office in Aus is located in Perth, and I'm not a fan of hot weather, as well as the job and future prospects there not being as interesting to me as the one here in Germany)

Until last month you were all 'Russia is good the west is all Nazis'
As soon as it became obvious that Russia was invading Ukraine we saw Bereta_Eder do a complete 180 and condemn Russia as a state in the harshest terms possible. That is precisely what you do not see in someone holding onto a double standard.

Afghans, Georgians, Chechens, Syrians all disagree.“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

The only double standard we might see in his posts is in cherry picking casualty estimates to coincide with his world view of the US as the prime evil on the world stage.
It seems obvious that Putin's invasion of Ukraine has finally led him to lump Russia in with the West as a real violent threat to innocent civilians rather than as a potential constraining force against Western aggression.

Nestor sure you raise fine points.
I don't absolve the US/west for being inoccent. To me they have commited war crimes. That includes my country in a lot of it. Greece since it's mdoern inception had one mind : they forcefully took us away from the community of prosperous democratic european nations which is our natural home (and we invented anyway lol) so there always is a huge european drive in greece (you call also call it western, it is the same thing). Then there is a reactionary force, unfiortunately it gravitates towards the church, and it is isolationsit and autocrat. So me callimng the west nazis much be I have exceeded some alcohol levels and it is good I am here and call the west nazis instead of driving for example. which I have never done (I'm always here calling the west nazis). Now of coruse that's to raise attention. Drunkness is loliness. and if noone wants to talk to you if you punch them in the shoulder they will. That's me calling the west nazis (which I have no done a lot i think, also considering Greece is a founding member (or quick adherant) of virtually every modern western imnstitution, that's kind of self defeating, if it was rational)
Also how can I say it is bad for the US to do business with saudi arabia when greece treats saudi arabia like a sweet little baby
Anyway I think that kind of history talk defeats the purpose. Putin changed the european landscape for ever and brought new realities. My good will towards russia for example has dissapeared and I always considered her a dictatorship even when I was affectionately tolerant
