You are (accidentally of course) alluding to one of the problems - Both sides will retreat to their trusted news sources to hear what they want (and to bash the other side). An "informed opinion" depends entirely upon your influences.

There is absolutely no reason to watch mainstream news unless you are already brainwashed. And if you are brainwashed you will not be able to save the Republic or what's left of it. You are in many ways, taken out of action. This is not a thing about staying in the middle.
