I think that Virginia is more informative than California. In part because Virginia is bluish purple and in part because the campaign was more complicated in Virginia (at least, for the winner). And 10 points is huge.

What I think we have learned
    • For Republicans that are not totally Trump aligned, you can't just run anti-Trump. This isn't just a VA versus CA thing, or a November versus September thing. Elder was very very close to Trump, and at least in some circles Youngkin ran as not-Trump. I know that he also ran as Trump friendly in some circles, I just know I heard a lot of commentary tonight from people who didn't think he was Trumpy (and he did keep Trump from physically campaigning in Virginia).
    • Democrats are going to be dinged for the economy. I have been expecting an economic correction since late Obama which isn't really Biden's fault at all, it is just something that started with not solving the problems that came out of Clinton/Bush and then Obama and Trump kicked the can down the road. It may come out now, for Biden, and voters aren't going to look at reasons or complicated blame, they are just going to blame whoever is President and their party... so Biden.
    • Democrats need to course correct on woke-ism. Yes, it excites the base and you need an excited base. Yes, I think some if it is correct. Yes, many of the attacks are false: CRT isn't being taught in k-12 schools in Virginia, Democratic lawmakers have not supported it being taught, and so on. But many of the people who do develop and strongly support CRT are part of the Democratic base, which is probably why Democratic politicians haven't yet said the obvious: "CRT is not taught in our K-12 schools. I do not support CRT being taught in our K-12 schools." People are angry about CRT without even knowing what it is, yes that means the voters are being stupid, but politicians should solve that problem by removing CRT from the discussion by sticking to the above point.
I think some of the problem is that the progressive left is upset about not getting their way. But they need to face the fact that they can't bring along the liberals are moderates like the reactionaries can bring along the conservatives... so the progressives have to give a little. And progressives have to keep voting and not just lose heart and sit at home.

I do not support the reactionaries at all, but they definitely seem to have a lot more 'spirit' then the progressives (or liberals/conservatives to be honest).

    JM
This is decent analysis and basically what I've been thinking, listening to the Democrat candidate basically use Biden's style of just constantly saying different variations of Orange Man Bad.

Yes and no, most of them switched parties around the time of JFK. Republicans went to Democrats and Democrats went to Republicans.

So some of them switched parties. It doesn't change the fact that they are Democrats when they did that. And now the Democrats, you included, are brainwashing children to hate themselves and think white babies are all racist. And you are ****ing lying about it, saying that you aren't. The only thing worse than a racist, is a racist kind of Holocaust denier like you. You are filth and people justifiably hate you.

See the GOP's Southern Strategy - a cynical, racist response to the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act - for knowledge of what actually happened to the Party of Lincoln...

"In American politics, the Southern strategy was a Republican Party electoral strategy to increase political support among white voters in the South by appealing to racism against African Americans. As the civil rights movement and dismantling of Jim Crow laws in the 1950s and 1960s visibly deepened existing racial tensions in much of the Southern United States, Republican politicians such as presidential candidate Richard Nixon and Senator Barry Goldwater developed strategies that successfully contributed to the political realignment of many white, conservative voters in the South who had traditionally supported the Democratic Party rather than the Republican Party. It also helped to push the Republican Party much more to the right.

The phrase "Southern Strategy" refers primarily to "top down" narratives of the political realignment of the South which suggest that Republican leaders consciously appealed to many white Southerners' racial grievances in order to gain their support. This top-down narrative of the Southern Strategy is generally believed to be the primary force that transformed Southern politics following the civil rights era. The scholarly consensus is that racial conservatism was critical in the post-Civil Rights Act realignment of the Republican and Democratic parties. Several aspects of this view have been debated by some historians and political scientists.

The perception that the Republican Party had served as the "vehicle of white supremacy in the South", particularly during the Goldwater campaign and the Nixon presidential elections of 1968 and 1972, made it difficult for the Republican Party to win back the support of black voters in the South in later years. In 2005, Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman formally apologized to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for exploiting racial polarization to win elections and ignoring the black vote."

                        • I'm not going to respond to a bunch of typical crap. Decent people believe that psychologically abusing children to push your own agenda is evil. That's what CRT is all about. If you lie and say that it isn't or that they aren't doing that you are like a Holocaust denier and a child abuser. No one should even talk to your creepy ass.
