  • Sealant versus Spare tire

This morning, as I drove my youngest to preschool (<2 miles away), I saw that my tires were losing pressure. Shortly afterwards I stopped at a gas station to investigate and found that I had a nail in my tire.

I do have a service agreement, but decided to follow the directions for the sealant (which I have and I don't have a spare tire). But in retrospect I think I probably should have had a tow.

What are people's experiences? What do you think about spare tire versus sealant. Initially I Thought sealant was pretty cool... now I think that spare tire might be better. But maybe you have to do sealant with tubeless?

    So thoughts, experiences?

Sealant as in the spraycan full of goo?

Good idea to have a can in the trunk, but Jesus, I wouldn't depend on the stuff - I've had tires explode under me on the interstate -twice- and NASA couldn't have put them back together.

Back in 2015 or so, I hit a super deep pothole in a storm (so couldn't see it, just saw a large puddle across the road). My tire was gone and my wheel was bent. Wouldn't have helped there either.

        It's good to have both.
Sealant is nice to have in an emergency, but it's not really good for your tires. And, as JM pointed out, there are times when it will not solve the problem. If there is an SAFE opportunity to put your spare tire on, do it. If not, use the sealant and have your tire dealt with professionally at the first available chance.

For me the sealant worked perfectly as far as driving on it went. I was told that were the nail was, that the tire had to be replaced, so that was unfortunate.

However the sealant was single use. And new sealant, from the dealer, cost ~2/3 of a new tire. It seems to me that at 2 flats it would be cheaper to have the spare (which can be multi-use) and it is likely that a tow truck would cost ~50$ (or half as much as the sealant).

(and I was also told that they preferred to just replace tires that had had sealant)

the sealant coats the inside of the tire and makes a mess for the person stuck with the job of patching the tire. I'd go with a full size spare, the little ones will serve their purpose but they're temporary

I've never used the sealant but would in a pinch, especially if the tire wasn't worth replacing

I usually just drive it ASAP to a tire shop(?) where they take out the tyre and patch fix it. 10 euros and it's done.
I always have a spare because there is a space just for a spare in the trunk. What else could I possibly put there

no idea how to change a spare of course.
It's jsut good to have around 10 tyre shops (vulcanizateurs) at a stone's throw away

I have roadside assistance too, which means I really should have called it instead of using the expensive sealant.

It sounded like they couldn't save the tire... but would have been cheaper even if I did have to pay for a tow.

What is this "expensive" sealant you are talking about?
"Fix a Flat" costs between 8 and 13 bucks, depending on the size of tire.
It has worked fine for me in an emergency and I always have a can in my trunk.

I went to the Toyota service station after they sold me a new replacement tire and asked for a new can of sealant.

                          It came to about 120.

My wife's Camry is only 1.5 years old so I think it still has roadside assistance. I have just always had AAA (make sure you upgrade to the 100 mile tow) since I was 16 so I guess I am paying for coverage I don't really need.
