At first other nations tried appeasement, and that failed spectacularly. We tried isolationism and it failed spectacularly. You can't appease or ignore genocidal maniacs bent on world domination.
Helping stop both was one of the great accomplishments of our nation and the Allies. All the WWII vets I knew, and their families, were proud of the sacrifices made in that effort. As they should be.
As for nukes, you've already agreed Imperial Japan would have gotten them eventually. That means a worse outcome than we have now.
