A plastic bag and a skateboard are not weapons even (pepperspray is considered a weapon actually). In Portland, like in Kenosha, there had been violence from both sides and there were reports of gun shots before the murders. From the limited amount that I know about Portland, it looks to be very analogous to Kenosha (except only one person was shot and not three in semi-separate incidents).
I think that in both of the cases self-defense is not the correct interpretation, and that is because guns and other arms (outside of the being in the hands of well-trained and clearly badged police officers who are following orders) have no place in protests, counter-protests or demonstrations.

Trump has been inciting this. What business did the right wing militia have coming to Portland to fight the protestors? In America, where both sides can be armed (but shouldn't be), the result was obvious.
Wheeler has condemned the violence (https://www.portlandmercury.com/blog...nuous-violence) but doesn't know how to stop it.

They came armed and ready and eager to bash heads. The protestors fought back. People dying is a result of Trump supporters (urged by Trump) coming to the cities to fight protestors.
The guy who died in Portland wasn't from Portland. Kyle wasn't from Kenosha.

McMahon also admitted that he threatened to sexually assault the young autistic daughter of a North Carolina woman who protested against white nationalists.
