If you ask actors how they inhabit a role convincingly, they'll often talk about calling on their own experiences to empathize with the character. Seems very plausible to me that, all else being equal, actors who share much in common with the character they're taking on (skin color, lifestyle, religion, etc.) are more likely to be able to do that successfully than actors who don't. So if we want to see actors acting well, seems a good idea to encourage producers to seek out those underrepresented actors when casting roles for underrepresented characters.
