  • Remember those that died to preserve the global order.

According to Macron that's what men fought and died for in WWI.

Truthfully I'm surprised that WaPo didn't literally claim that he called Trump a Nazi.

Honestly the German military's general staff, which people became members of through a meritocratic process, was much more responsible for the outbreak of a general European war than any member of the European royalty.

Tho to be "fair" the latter still bear a lot of responsibility for the pre-war alliance system, and the failure to actually stop the war early when it became a stalemate that killed ppl en masse for years without much gain until things started moving again 1918. In WWII a peace without victory over the axis was unthinkable due to its totalitarian nature, but 1914 and beyond the actual differences could have been resolved with a serious approach and enough political will me thinks.

Also the German staff guys had spikier helmets than the grunts

Guess it's a sunken cost fallacy - if you make peace without victory, all those hundreds of thousands or millions of men you've lost so far have been "wasted".

The Kaiser kind of was responsible as he sent a telegram giving unlimited support to the Austro-Hungarians to do what they wished with the Serbians. If they had been a bit more involved and detailed in their support (saying what they would and would not support) war could have been avoided. Hell, the UK would never have gotten involved if Germany had never invaded neutral Beglium (which the UK had guaranteed going back to the 1830's).
