V with all the updates was good. I think better than IV (not counting mods). But then again I was never much of an MPer.
i got vanilla VI when it was a humble monthly highlight, so USD 12 with other stuff thrown in, so good price IMHO. I like it a lot, although it could use some more dynamism. The ai sucks, though.
did you routinely beat V at diety? I remember beating it easily the first time I played, at deity. For me that was proof that it would never be better than IV.
And there were way too many games where at the finish it was just too many "just hit enter again and again" YAWN, not "just one more turn"

Ah, but I very rarely play the game competitively (which is why I only rarely play MP). I'm generally playing on King/emperor, intentionally not microing or calculating everything as tightly as possible and usually just going on a whim (I very rarely decide on a victory condition until the very end of the match, for instance).

I've taken to playing some Civ 6 in the few moments of free time I have (7 month old daughter has meant hell for my gaming time).

      • That was the issue. With IV i too don't like to over micro or take an hour for each turn so I play at emperor or immortal and winning still isn't a given. If I screw up, I lose.
I never lost a game of V no matter what level I played at including the very first game when I didn't know what the heck I was doing. Massive failure. That's not a game, it's a sandbox.
