We're not going to have regular, everyday access to space until we have another way than launching to get there, I think. Also a reason.
Considering a ticket on the flight I was talking about is estimated around 35 million, yes alternate methods are needed before it becomes an everyday thing.
Besides a space elevator, what other methods would you bet on?

Laser maybe, one that can impart a constant acceleration, but I don't see a gun type launch for humans.

While driverless cars seem to be the next great thing for us I'm wondering if an all-machine civilization would strive to engineer additional organic drivers for their cars which were driverless to begin with.
While there has been great progress on Driverless cars, I'll be interested to see the first time one kills someone. It will probably be the result of a logic decision. How do you logically program what life is more valuable. Will it be the the occupants of the car or the people the car might be ready to hit? That could end up quite the legal issue.

Even SpaceX’s strongest supporters are somewhat surprised by its announcement that it will make its first ever beyond-Earth orbit manned spaceflight in a loop around the Moon next year with two private citizens as paying customers.

Well if the 35 mil each number was true, they have considerable incentive.

Inspired by experience: we also need some new socks technology. I'm tired of throwing away a pair of socks because only one has a hole.
Of course one could buy always the same type of socks and hope you can get full pairs of the remaining ones without holes. But it would be cooler to have either self-repairing socks or something that does not get holes in the first place, at least not for a longer period of time.
