  • Excellent H1-B Visa reform idea.

Honestly, this is the best idea to reform out broken skilled worker visa program that I have seen. Back in the early 90's the H1B Visa program was introduced supposedly so that companies could get access to foreign highly skilled workers that they just couldn't find in the US. In reality, companies just used it to bring in millions of low paid virtual slaves ho they could threaten with deportation unless they put up with low wages and work weeks over 100 hours per week. Witness Disney laying off their entire American IT staff (average pay $68,000 a year) and replacing them with Indians for around $32,000.

By requiring all companies using H1B visa workers to pay a minimum of $100,000 per employee per year the abuse will instantly stop yet if a company really can't find a domestic worker with a specific skill they still can bring in a foreigner. It is a great reform idea given that abuse isn't just wide spread but the norm.

In 2012 they did raise the minimum pay to $65,000 after John McCainslammed Disney for its naked abuse of American workers but raising it to $100,000 would be a big step forward if nothing revolutionary.

What is still needed is random audits to insure companies are actually following the rules which is something lobbyists have so far blocked.

Why? Legit question. Dinner makes a good point here.

Why put a minimum? Why not just put a surcharge of 30k per year on each H1B visa and remove all quotas?

I know at least 5 people who will be deported this year who are making 200k+ because they will lose the H1B lottery, by the way.

And you apparently want to protect salaries for Americans making over $65,000 a year, which would be detrimental to the welfare of those making less

Why is there even a lottery for a program that's intended to bring in people to do jobs that no Americans can do? Wouldn't you want all such people to come in?

Read the article in the OP and maybe you will find out. The answer is because employers have been abusing this system to fire well qualified American workers and replace them with not very qualified but extremely cheap foreign workers. That was not what this program was supposed to do. Supposedly it was for employers who just couldn't find qualified Americans, which is a false premise to begin with. The reality is employers just want cheaper foreign labor and why the program should be killed outright.

If you make > 60k / Year but aren't competitive in a free job market you don't actually deserve > 60k / Year. You're just being subsidized at the expense of everyone else (most of whom don't make as much as you)

As a side not by raising the cap to $100,000 that would remove the punters like Disney competing for visas to bring in low skill 3rd world code monkeys thus making it more likely that high skilled people like your friends will get one.

That's what businessmen do. They use our country's laws to their advantage. Maybe we should make the immigration system less convoluted.

They aren't actually "low skilled" if they're worth more than $65,000. I'm pretty sure the average American makes less.
