I was just talking to my mom about raising my daughter.

We don't have TV in the house. Other than on airplanes, I and my wife watch something together once a month or so and we put something on for our daughter (generally 10-40 minutes) a couple of times a month. We use to have netflix but even got rid of it because we didn't use it enough (we now just use youtube).

My mom says that television is " part of everyday life. "

Is television (netflix or normal) part of your life?

I don't really have time for TV to be part of my life. I suppose I could give up part of my internet time (I probably have 2-4 hours a day, mostly online magazines like economist, the atlantic and bloomberg). If I am on the high side (4 or even 8) it is because I go onto reddit and huffington post. Doing more than 2 hours is a waste, but I would like to spend those on work/family/games/books and not on TV.

I should add, TV was sometimes a source of conflict between my mother and my father (who was conflicted about TV). We didn't have a TV in the house until I was 9 or so, and were heavily limited in what we could watch until my parents split when I was 16.

It varies. Sometimes 4-10 hours a week, sometimes less. I usually game more. Work is stressful so I need a break... so I prefer gaming (PC).

Anyways, I do watch some TV and have Sling TV. $20 a month for premium channels I would watch, and not $100-$120 for crap I wouldn't. Sling TV is technically streaming, but it is all live TV. Through my Roku box.

I could also add that in my late teens I was basically addicted to TV. I watched more than 24 hours straight of a three stooges marathon when I was 18 and watched a ton of reality TV (which I have always hated) that same year.

When visiting friends/relatives who watch TV (whether it is 4+ hours a day, like some of them, or less than 10 hours a week, like others) I usually end up watching some of what they are watching despite not finding it interesting or valuable.

TV - the device - have it, but no use really. Also have Netflix, but don't watch it at all under normal circumstances. (might a bit over Christmas holidays, or at least I think so now)

On the other hand, being in front of a monitor 8 hrs+ for work, and some gaming/wasting time here on occasion - is a habit. May not count as "TV" and is slightly more active, but just slightly - essentially I'd consider Internet/gaming/PC to be evolved television.

In that sense - sitting in front of a screen is a significant part of my life, work and entertainment wise.

I picked 4-10 hours a week, but I wouldn't call it significant. I cuddle with my wife while watching Big Bang Theory. I will also probably watch this season of Survivor and of course I try to watch as much NFL as I can, but it's really very limited with me working weekends... It totals maybe 6 hours a week. But I spend FAR more time on the computer surfing and the TV is just kinda there.

I accidentally cut the cord. I stream shows and movies somewhat frequently mostly as a way to kill time, but the majority of my time is spent online reading crap.

I binge watch some TV shows on Netflix from time to time (often on our TV), and watch YouTube. O'Reilly, Colbert, LastWeekTonight ... all as entertainment of course. I haven't watched much TV otherwise for the past couple years, just the occasional movie and "reality" shows like the new Star Wars, Pawn Stars, or Storage Wars.

On YouTube I do watch a lot of nature/gardening videos.

                  I don't watch regular tv

I watch Netflix/Amazon prime about 15 hours a week (mostly while holding my infant son or between the hours of midnight and 3 am when normal people sleep).

I mostly listen to the economist and podcasts while driving. I read about 10 hours a week (entirely nonfiction) which gets me through 3-5 books a week. This plus about 30 mins a day browsing the internet at work is my media consumption.

I watch some TV and some Netflix. I wish I could watch more, but the level of writing just isn't high enough to be worth it. Get some better writers dammit!

If you still get up before 7 (or even 8), you are incredible.

I started requiring more than 6 hours a night towards the end of graduate school. And I will take 7-8 if I can get it.

(In undergrad I averaged <4 hours a night on weeknights, but I think that had a real long term negative impact.)

Weeknights in undergrad I averaged 2.5 hours a night, with 12 hours on weekends.

Yeah, that is approximately what I did too.

I thought that sleep was a waste of time, and that I should play games and surf the net in addition to working and studying.

Now I am really messed up when I get less than 5 hours for more than one night in a row. And if I am going to the gym, I really need more than 7.

(I haven't really gone to the gym much for the last 2 years though.)

Semester just started up again, so my hours of sleep per night should be dropping precipitously soon.
