At church; I didn't interact with anyone during my homeschooling periods outside of church.

I don't think that is the way to go. My cousin who was primarily homeschooled was really messed up by it I think (he was a very social person naturally... ).

I think it can be really good if there are a lot of activities. Obviously it is really hard on the parents and most are not capable of it.

Yes I know. You didn't have contact with other cultures so you didn't get a chance to get rid for instance of your prejudices towards trans people.

      • I too had fear of gays when I was young. (mainly because I didn't know any so my opinion was formed from comments from people like BK)
Once you have gay friends, it's different.
Probably the only one good think to say for forced conscription in the military. You're forced to come into contact with a wide strata and learn they're basically not that different than you

I don't have a prejudice against trans people.

I just hold to factual definition of female and male and recognize that the reality of sex does not change during a 'transition'.

I am entirely OK with, and at times in my life would have considered, a true transition (of the type described in Banks books, for example).

Somehow that is enough to condemn me. I think that says something highly negative about you and your culture and value system and not about me and my value system.

          • IT's human nature to fear what is different and unknown.
The best way to eliminate that fear is through knowledge

            • But that isn't what we are talking about.

We are talking about where you get that knowledge, and what knowledge is received.

I don't want my child getting western reason culture as her predominant cultural acquisition and the vantage point form which she perceives knowledge. Which is what would happen if I send her to a normal US school.

By the way, I don't want her to attend a Chilean school either.

In Indian, or possibly a South Africa, school is much more interesting to me. Even US Christian schools are usually bombarded by the standard US cultural fare.

(We don't have a TV in the house, it is one of the greatest sources of the negative parts of US culture)

              • If you watch with them, you can make it a real positive teaching experience.

And it's likely that eventually your kids will be the subject of taunts for not being familiar with that culture.

But it doesn't speak for your kids education (at home) if it is so weak, that you have to keep your kid away from contact with other cultural influences, for fear that it "switches" over to them.
Maybe, instead of keeping it away from other cultural influences, you should put energy into explaining the reasons why you have your way of living instead of the standard american one.

This way your kid may voluntarily keep the lifestyle you teach them, instead of just keeping it, because it was indoctrinated into it

I dislike watching it and find it lacking in value, why would I watch it with my daughter or include it in her development?

Kids learn by what is going on around them. They are getting 80-90% of something, of course they are going to learn it. They can't help but learn it, and learn more form it then from the 10-20% their parents give them.

That is obvious, simple math, why do you oppose it?

(I do have a friend who is even more against TV and prevailing culture than I, and his expectations is that his children will not learn adversely from school because he decided not to, but I think that he can't assume that of his children. Also, he has a wife who stays at home and puts a lot into their children (so it might be 70/30 instead of 80/20 or 90/10), my wife intends to go back to work next year.)

(Personally, I always want to ask my fellow church goers when they complain about their children's behaviour 'what do you expect? they learn from their environment and what environment have you given them?')

                              • My real concern is that I can see Indian and (Indian) South African culture changing to become more Western. It is likely that it will not be so easy as moving to South Africa and sending my daughter to one of the schools her mother attended or favored.
