Whether something intends to kill civilians isn't as important as whether something will kill civilians. If we dropped a nuke on Baghdad and said "well we weren't targeting the civilians, we were only targeting Saddam Hussein and the civilians happened to be in the way" then that wouldn't have passed muster. The actual invasion of Iraq wasn't that flagrant, but we were still essentially saying "we're going to invade Iraq, this is almost certainly going to directly cause the deaths of [X] civilians, and that's okay by us." Fortunately international law was on our side thanks in no small part to our having veto powers in the only internationally recognized political body that could have censured us.

yes, exactly. you put it very well.

this kind of argument often comes up in these sorts of debates and others, like israel/palestine, where there is a massive disparity between the numbers killed and one side resorts to saying basically 'but if they had the chance they'd kill many more than our side actually do kill'. from any moral perspective worth having, actually killing people is much worse than merely wanting to kill people. that's why although neo-nazis are scum for wanting to kill jews, etc., the actual nazis were much, much worse because they actually killed millions of people.

You're only trying to justify suicide bombings because Muslims do it. You certainly wouldn't try to justify any type of killing of Muslim civilians. Anyone who doesn't say your argument is wrong and horribly evil on it's face is giving you undue credibility.
