People want change. Previous president was black, which would have been completely outrageous for your grandfathers. It didn't work well. Now some people want to vote for someone who is as far from mainstream (Bush Third and Clinton Second) as possible. Democracy doesn't work as advertised, but people believe in democracy - and so they try to vote for someone who will be as far from current non-democracy as possible.
