And yes, the African countries dominate the top places by fertility rate. However his argument is that they have to be 'above replacement'

Most countries that have more babies than replacement are in Africa.

This is patently not so!

The average of the three lists of countries with above replacement fertility is 118.

There are only 54 countries in Africa.

Therefore African countries are contributing to <50% of the problem.

While overpopulation creates issues, it is only a consequence of the lack of development, which will get to us via overpopulation or otherwise, resource wars, irreversible global warming and so on.

Getting developed should be 21st century main focus, but instead we will likely kill each other than anything else. At the moment it looks like this stage will have to wait post WWIII.

Also, these stats are only pertaining to births, and not actual population growth. The reason for so many births in many of these countries could be because they're also masking very high infant mortality rates.

Again JM's rationale is faulty. I worry that JM has a racist attitude to Africa that it's a continent awash with fornicating uneducated savages that are threatening to swamp the world, or something like that. How else could it explain his frankly absurd opening stance:

I do not think Rapa Nui case can be argued against, however if we develop societies around the world on time, Rapa Nui scenario is not inevitable (thus overpopulation should not be the main focus, not to mention that effectively the only way that it can be tackled is via development ).

We still (IMO) have it all to lose, but that is I guess a different discussion.

Reduced birthrates happen due to improved standard of living which include better healthcare, access to contraception and better education.

As long as society hasn´t moved away from blind faith into religion (like the majority of people in western industrialized nations has) there is a big chance that contraceptions, even if given out freely, will be rejected by a good part of the population

it's part of it, certainty. however, brazil and other south american countries are examples of places that are strongly catholic but where the church's commands are routinely ignored.

The other thing I found preposterous about JM's argument, was the way that he dismissed the effects of India's population (for the record, JM, India is not in Africa ) growth on the world. Sure, it's a relatively low growth rate of about 1.2%, but that's of a massive population of over a billion people...

That's a population growth last year of 14,988,454!

To put that into perspective, if India's population growth of one year suddenly became a country in Africa, it would be 23rd out of 54(55) in population.
