I've never said the US military did nothing wrong. I just said that there are possible scenario where they didn't do something illegal based on what the Afghans are claiming happened.

Well, I interpret your scenarios (at least if the officials share your opinion) this way:
If I am patient (or nurse or doctor) at a hospital and someone claims that there are enemy forces in the hospital,
then I am fair game ... and noone will be responsible (or get punished) if I get killed

This is how the US interprets the law, except there can't be just claims, there actually have to be enemy firing at the security forces that those forces can't handle.
