Err, no ****? You might remember me arguing in the past about how Dresden was nothing more or less than a blatant war crime that should have been prosecuted. We also memorably fought a war with China to allow us to continue selling opium in their country. The list of war crimes is just staggering.

The thing is, it'd be nice if we had reached a point where the response to being angry about a war crime wasn't 'yeah but your country did them too!'. I've never committed a war crime, or voted for one and as such I feel no particular personal guilt for Lord Bratterson-Pants Worther wiping out a village of natives a few centuries ago.

I don't only complain about US war crimes, I'm just as happy to attack the UK or any other country for them too. You guys just get a lot of the crap recently, because you're the ones fighting wars where innocent people are getting killed in large numbers.

                          True ...
on the other hand that was before the geneva conventions ...
at a time when the "Haager Landkriegsordnung" (Hague Convention) still was in power ...
which was concluded at a time when there still were no warplanes ... and combat took place away from major population centers.

Therefore it contained a few passages that were used as loophole by the british and americans, in order to make carpet bombing of population centers appear legal. As a result neither were british airforce commanders (like the infamous Arthur Harris) accused for any bombardement of major cities (like Dresden or Hamburg), nor german airforce commanders (for Rotterdam and the like)

The geneva convention consequently was made based upon the experiences in WW 2

your post sparked a question in my mind:

has anyone in the US military ever been punished for the death of innocent people in a bombing?

and i'm not talking a reprimand for a FF incident or something

i'm talking straight up, hands in cuffs, federal prison

I do, any time UK forces are accused of committing crimes. Like the British soldiers who threw some Iraqi teens in the river for looting. One drowned, and although compensation was paid, no soldier was charged. That disgusts me, just like the other cases that have arisen.

The thing is though, that just in terms of numbers the US vastly outnumbers every other country involved. You also have a military training regime that emphasizes aggressive tactics and doesn't do nearly enough to train soldiers in the cultures they'll be living and working around. Even when it comes to airstrikes, there's been far too much of a tendency to accept civilian casualties as acceptable collateral.

We can either all condemn this ****, or just go 'wah wah everyone does it' and then it'll never change.

                              • absolutely condemn it

                                as a mistake

but a crime? that's a serious charge and obviously false

                                dont be an idiot

also, stop ****ing pretending like the US and UK have different military cultures (in that respect)
