I don't think there's anything here for non-lunatics to dispute over. A bunch of innocent civilians died due to somebody's gross incompetence. Obviously, this should not have happened. What else is there to say?

How exactly does a hospital suddenly become not a hospital if someone is firing from it? The Geneva Conventions could hardly be any clearer.

Because you are not targeting the hospital, you are targeting the the fighters who are already actively engaging you. That doesn't apply.

More importantly is that UN Charter says that self defense is a legitimate excuse, and you don't have to wait to warn people before hand if you are actively being attacked, and Afghan police claim they were attacked. The US, Afghan government, and NATO are all conducting separate investigations which is the best they can do right now. But if it was self defense, then the police were allowed to asked for support, and they may not have had the ability to get to the hospital, or to see if there were doctors/nurses even there.

Where the Geneva Convention is clear is that you cannot target a hospital, if it is a dual use facility such as a headquarters for Taliban leaders, and target that hospital without letting them know. But this allegedly was not just a headquarters and a location that Taliban were actively attacking from.
