    That did not sound insane.

It is true that Alby had a very bad start in life. Given that start, he has indeed done himself proud.

Just present your ideas in a clear and easy to understand way (because at least 50% of people are idiots), show loyalty to your bosses without tying yourself to them too tightly, and take any opportunity you get to meet senior people in your field (without being that ass kissing ***** everyone has contempt for). Just being the smart, driven, likable guy who people know they can rely on but everyone knows will probably move on upward soon can get you a very long way.

Oh and if you can possible avoid it, don't make enemies. You can pretty much guarantee you'll run into them again, and people have very, very long memories. Calling peers out because you think they're not performing is about the best possible way to become hated. Let other people fail if they want to, and just let your own quality show through.
Thank you for taking the time to post. Still, being "the smart, driven, likable guy" only starts coming to play from the interview on. I need to break into the interview stage. While I haven't interviewed for positions as competitive as the positions I am applying for now, it seems meaningful that I have never not been hired after an interview. I may need some brushing up, but I'm effective once I get there. The problem is, the silence after resume submissions.

But that might be my problem that I've misidentified the first stage in the process. It may begin at LinkedIn messaging former military officers working at banks as the first step in building connections; not to solicit for jobs but to ask for general advice as a transitioning military officer looking to get into banking.

I have drill this weekend so I may have to begin attacking how to write to them on Monday.

These days, according to the National Employment Law Project, the average age of fast-food workers is 29. Forty percent are 25 or older; 31 percent have at least attempted college; more than 26 percent are parents raising children.Nov 28, 2013

Listen. There is a reason that people focused on the super long-ass commute. You seemed bitter about it - otherwise why bring it up at all?

And as stated in the other thread, there are some very good ideas for how to alter your resume to get into the interview stage. Don't be too stubborn to take that advice - Hell, why don't you change your resume up as was stated by Oerdin, rah, etc. and send them to the companies that never called you back for an interview. That way you don't really lose anything, right?

I'm talking more about the reputation you build after you work in a couple of places and start meeting industry people from other companies. Your reputation can open a lot of doors for you. I don't know if its the same in the US by the way, but over here if you want to meet people there are quite often industry related networking events you can just turn up to, or with a small door charge. That environment where people have had a few drinks and are just looking to swap stories and relax can be a truly awesome place to make new contacts.

The private sector is a place where people who can figure out what to do thrive vs those who can figure out how to do it.

In USD, my salary has now dwindled to 43k, even after the raise. How does one go looking for a job in the US? Here you usually post your resume on a job/candidate search site and click on job offers or wait for the recruiters to do the reverse.

                    • At the end of the day you have a 4 year degree and some military experience. The degree gets you past the part of the job description that says "Four year degree in Accounting or related field", nothing more. You've got some military experience which is a nice to have, but probably isn't going to open doors or be a factor to the extent you think it is. What else do you have?

You work with software and computers, right? Apply for an H1-B Visa, a type of visa for high tech workers which helps them get in much faster than through the normal immigration system. There are way more jobs for H1-B visa holders than their are visas issued but the rules can be kind of archaic so make sure you read them and follow them to the letter. Once you do get one you will be making much, much more money than you are now and pretty much can get a job in any state you want.

                        • That's not how it works. The employer must sponsor the H1b application. He needs to find a job first. Just look on job boards like DICE. Then apply on line. Also pick a company you have heard of like Google, Facebook, Salesforce.com, etc. and check the jobs section of their web site. Then apply on line.
