Z spellings are fine in British English, just less common.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

Men use alcoholism as a mitigating factor in legal defences all the time, yes.

For holding someone captive and torturing them?!

Can't see why it'd be any different for one type of crime to another. I don't particularly agree with it as a defense personally, but its not unusual.

It seems to me that she is either not responsible for her actions, in which case she should be committed to an insane asylum, or she is responsible, in which case even the three years of the actual sentence seems way, way to light. If, of course, we are getting the full story in the linked article. She clearly is a danger to society either way.
The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty…we will be remembered in spite of ourselves… The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the last generation… We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.

In the US you can ask for rehab except for jail for minor offenses. It's not a defense. You aren't supposed to get leniency for being an alcoholic, drunk or female.

How much jail time does this mean we can get for Kid for torturing us for years?
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

If he's tried in France, it will be an 8 hour sentence.
