You are an idiot, really. If you ask any Russian was his grandfather a WW2 veteran - he/she would answer - yes, of course. If you ask him did his grandfather lost any relatives in that war the answer will be positive as well. Just for example: my grandfather had two brothers, both KIA, my other grandfather had his father KIA and his uncle KIA, my grandmother had his sister moved to Germany for slave labor her fate unknown. And it's just close relatives. And not a full list. And it's a typical story for ANY MODERN Russian family.

I'm sure many would, but claiming all Russians have a grandfather who is a WWII veteran would imply that at least half of Russian men in 1945 were in the Red Army.

The trouble with Eastern Front movies is the fact that nobody was actually glad to have the Soviet army rolling back through. It just doesn't have the aspect of selfless sacrifice that Americans, Britons, and Canadians liberating France and the Low Countries does.

Fun fact: during the course of the Western Front in the ETO, the Germans took more casualties in the West than the East.

Not to forget poland ... which first had to endure the joint invasion by the Soviet Union and Nazi-Germany,
finally had to endure the reconquest by the soviets ... and had to endure atrocities commited by both, germans as well as soviets (Katyn for example).
And finally, after the war ended, was forcefully incorporated into the USSR

I've always felt that the most tragic consequence of Market Garden failing is that we were unable to secure all of Germany before the Soviets got there, which could have possibly given the Western Allies a bargaining chip to force Stalin to recognize the Polish Government in Exile.
