  • What is the common definition of "un-[your-country-adjective]"?

Certain American posters like Kidicious like to use the word "un-American" to describe people/things they don't like, such as black teens thugs or Communism or whatever. I don't think I've ever seen a non-American poster describe something as being "un-Canadian" or "un-British" or "un-Australian" or whatever on this or any other site (exception: I recall a Russian poster describing homosexuality as being anti-Russian or something, though I don't recall if it was on this site or on another), presumably because either we've generally got a better class of poster from outside the US or else because those terms just aren't as commonly used.

So the question is, does your country have a term that is analogous to "un-American," and if so, a. who uses it, and b. what do they mean by it?

You basically never hear anyone saying things like that here, although an occasional politician has described things un-British. It's mainly just met with a rolling of the eyes.

American conservatives have an idealized conception of the politicians who were involved in creating the United States (called the "Founding Fathers" since women weren't allowed a role in such important work) and the American constitution is seen as embodying their unified ideology. Anything that doesn't conform to this ideology is un-American. A synonym for un-American is "unconstitutional" which has nothing to do with how the US constitution actually works in practice.

one will never hear un-brasilian or similar. appeals will be made to ideals rather than nationality, though nationalism is cynically exploited in other ways.

I'm pretty sure the term "un-American" essentially means you disagree with each other, and because it's such a useful term that embodies the spirit of American politics so well ... those who don't use it are un-American.

No seriously, I'm really curious what prompted you to say that. Did you somehow interpret something I posted as saying that I think that I'm British?

Why did BK say you were going to try to get me banned? You can only get racists to say racist things. I'm not racist.

So I'm British because I was going to try to get you banned? Seems like that would be a more or less universal desire.

Also, if I recall correctly, I was trying to get you banned for starting a thread in which you wanted people to list posters that they wanted dead. I am still dumbfounded that you ever thought that this would be a good idea, either in the eyes of the forum administrators or in the eyes of the rest of the human race.
