      It must suck being wrong.

It's a famous stereotype: in America, a British accent makes you irresistible to the opposite sex.

A new YouGov America survey has shown that British accents are, indeed, very popular. 35% of Americans say British accents are attractive, while only 6% say they are obnoxious.

To American women, the attraction is even greater. 39% of them say a British accent is alluring compared to 31% of US men.

49% of Americans are unphased by British tones, saying the accent is neither attractive nor obnoxious.

But the love is all one-way: a mere 11% of British people say American accents are attractive, while 16% say they are obnoxious and 69% say they are neither.

        39%

And you do know that American woman are thinking of the posh accents when they hear "British accents" right? They think Benedict Cumberbatch, not Billy Connolly.

It's actually quite amusing sitting in bars watching folks who sounds like Ricky Gervais or Ozzy Osbourne trying to pick up chicks solely based on their accent. Sorry chaps, that ain't the accent women like when they say they enjoy British accents.

Anyways, the Guardian has an article on the same stuff, but this commenter hits the issue right on the nose:

It’s official, the British accent is the sexiest in the world! Hordes of horny immigrants are probably queuing up at Calais right now

          All British accents?

No, only the Received Pronunciation accent. My Streatham, i.e. South London, accent has been deemed incomprehensible in both Boston and San Francisco, and certainly not - as far as I could tell - a turn-on.

Are they locals trying to affect an accent, or is your local inundated with Brits?

I live in Atlanta. We usually get folks from all over the place. Though, for whatever reason, I've run into more Irish (like actual immigrants from Ireland) than any other.

(also any bar that shows that Prem is going to attract a fair number of British clientele)

39% positive against 6% negative is highly statistically significant.

Ah, so as expected you're taking poll based evidence and responding with some random person commenting on a news site. Good comeback.

There are quite huge variations in accents in Britain. No-one is saying every one of them is appealing to Americans. It certainly doesn't require an upper class accent however, as I know from personal experience. Please continue your bitter yank tears, while we continue to seduce your females.

Uh huh... you may indeed go ahead and try, but don't try to fool yourself that American women aren't thinking of Colin Firth or Benedict Cumberbatch when they hear "British accent".

(though y'all got nothing on Australians in the seduction accent dept, FWIW - there is a reason we cast Brits as villains in our movies but not Australians )

Please stop being wrong, it's starting to become a habit..

Brits have the world's sexiest accents, survey finds

The British Empire may no longer be the biggest on Earth, but the world still thinks their accents are the sexiest.

A British accent is the world's most attractive accent, according to a recent Time Out dating survey. A whopping 27% of 11,000 survey participants in 24 cities across the globe believe British accents easily outpace any other accent.

The United States placed second, with 8.7% of respondents voting that American was their favorite accent. Irish and Australian accents came in at No. 3 and No. 4, respeectively, meaning English-speaking languages rounded out the top four spots.

                        Here's the full list:

                        1 British

                        2 American

                        3 Irish

                        4 Australian

                        5 French

                        6 Italian

                        7 Spanish

                        8 Scottish

                        9 Latin American

                        10 Scandinavian

French, the language of love, placed a measly fifth; however, Frenchmen might prefer to cite the findings of a Hotels.com survey from 2013, which found that French was the world's sexiest language.

In 2009, Irish topped the list as world's sexiest accent in a poll of 5,000 women; French placed fourth while British finished at No. 6.

For now, though, the British accent can enjoy its reign. Cheers.

You realize that your "Time Out" survey has American as the 2nd most favorite accent, right? So... you expect that to prove?

And that's a worldwide poll, not an American poll... try again.

(interestingly, as said, in 2009 Irish was #1 when polling just women, while British was #6)

Polling data on the specific accent likes and dislikes of purely American women are unsurprisingly not thick on the ground. Although as I already posted one originally that directly contradicts your statement about Australians, it's not like I need another.

The Guardian also asks "Which British Accent" in response to the Time Out (which btw, isn't that a British outfit) poll.

‘British’ leaves ‘American’ a distant second in survey as ‘most dateable accent’ but are we talking Sir Roger Moore, Sean Bean, Catherine Zeta-Jones or Rory McIlroy?

Atlanta's a nice city. I kinda wish I had a reason to visit more. My dad goes there every couple months since his law firm has a big office there.
