  • Wisconsin passes Right To Work Law

The legislation prohibits the decades-old practice of contracts being signed between businesses and unions requiring private-sector workers to pay labor fees. The federal Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 allowed states to pass such legislation — one of the few areas where states can affect private-sector unions. So far, 24 other states have passed right-to-work.

Under federal law, unions are required to represent everyone in a work unit, even those who don’t belong to the union.

Supporters say workers should get to decide whether to pay their own money toward unions and argue having such a law in place would help lure businesses to Wisconsin. Opponents say unions and employers should be able to reach contracts as they see fit and that it’s reasonable to require all employees to pay their share of the cost of representing them.

“Right-to-work gives power to the individual,” said Rep. Michael Schraa (R-Oshkosh).

Walker is expected to sign it into law on Monday.

They called an extraordinary session of the state legislature to ram it through quickly. Reminiscent of Michigan passing its RTW during a lame duck session. Punk move.

Frankly, it's shocking that this didn't happen in the first year of Walker's first term.

Why are unions required by law to represent everyone in a work unit if people in the work unit can opt out of paying anything?

How soon before you bring back slavery? Of course, it can't be only blacks owned by whites - I doubt if there are enough black people in Wisconsin to make it work. Maybe if you just brand the slaves on the forehead you'll be able tell who is who.

Virginia's had right to work for over 20 years and nope, no slaves. The sky didn't even fall. Very anticlimactic.

What is funny about dumb**** Kenobi is that he is a teacher who would be getting paid more if he were working at a public school in a state with a strong teacher's union.

It is odd that I seem to care more about his own financial situation than he does.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker Signs Right-To-Work Bill

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker signed a right-to-work measure Monday that makes his state the 25th in the nation with such a law. That effectively means that mandatory union membership and dues are banned at privately owned businesses — a move strongly opposed by unions, which say it restricts collective bargaining.

Shawn Johnson of Wisconsin Public Radio reports: "Walker signed the bill at an invitation-only ceremony Monday morning at Badger Meter, north of Milwaukee. He was surrounded by company officials and others who supported the divisive proposal, including Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald."

Before the signing, Walker, a likely Republican presidential candidate for 2016, said the law "sends a powerful message across the country and around the world."

Shawn notes that Walker had previously said right-to-work legislation wasn't on his agenda.

"I have no interest in a right-to-work law in this state," Walker said in 2012. "We're not going to pursue that in the remainder of our term, and we're not going to pursue it in the future. The reason is private-sector unions are my partner in economic development."

But Walker has been more receptive since the state's Republican lawmakers announced they would send the measure, which passed the Legislature in less than two weeks, to the governor.

"We now have given one more big thing on that checklist to say that Wisconsin is open for business," he said recently.

Supporters of the measure say it will bring businesses to the state and keep them there; opponents say it will lower wages.

Monday's move comes four years after the governor signed a bill that all but ended collective-bargaining rights for most public sector unions. The right-to-work law goes into effect immediately.

Virginia has had right to work for something like 60-70 years.

Not likely, because it's much harder to become a teacher in places with a strong union, and junior teachers' salaries are lower since pay is by seniority.
