Yeah, but they're such bad drivers that they need the space

(But the mass transit would prevent that)

The problem with mass transit is that it is essentially a commie-socialist policy in the eyes of the average American.

Don't know about teens... but ages 15-24:

      USA: 13.62%

      UK: 12.01%

Not a major difference, but perhaps significant? I wouldn't really know.

        As I said, long term.
You won't get an argument from me on that. America already has too many homes due to new development. IIRC, there are a lot more empty homes than there are homeless. Seems like our current policies do a horrendous job at providing optimal results.

1% of a country of 300 million is 3 million people. With regards to traffic fatalities, we're talking about 30k deaths per year in America... 1% of 1%.

            1% is a lot.

I submit that driving in America is more dangerous than driving in Euro countries because we believe in liberty here in America. In Europe, if someone cuts you off, you get all pinko commie about how everyone owns the roads and yadda yadda and just let it happen. But in America, we all know that we each personally own the road, so if someone cuts us off, then they have violated our rights as free Americans and must be punished, preferably by ramming their car repeatedly and then beating the driver with a tire iron if you can run them off the road. Basically, Europeans are a bunch of pinko pussies who fear conflict, whereas freedom-loving Americans will not be cowed into safe driving.

But surely because everyone in the US is packing, no one would be stupid enough to do **** like that, eh sava?

And I don't get road rage, I get road calm and calmly find way to **** the transgressor up the ass with Terminator 2-like efficiency...

It certainly is a risk... which is why I try to limit my... "incidents"

also, my thoughts on gun ownership may not necessarily be reflective of my personal situation

yes. the drivers here are terrible and cause a lot of accidents through sheer stupidity. there's also a lack of enforcement of traffic rules that contributes to the problem. they are also almost invariably arseholes, and frankly by killing each other they do humanity a favour. the problem though is that many pedestrians and cyclists get caught up in it too.

not really, they just need to extend that policy to all areas.

Also, Moby, I didn't think about this. America is a large country. Driving in Chicago isn't the same as driving in Florida, or California, or Texas. There's a wide variation in deaths per 100k and deaths per miles traveled within the US... enough as to make comparisons between the two countries pointless.

A summary of fatality statistics about state by state compiled by IIHS from 2022 Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data.

Montana seems to be the worst at 22.6 deaths per 100k population. DC seems to be the best at 3.1 (2013 data).

I'd be curious to see breakdowns for the metropolitan areas versus UK cities of comparable size.

Climate may also play a role. Weather is different all over America... whereas the UK has generally the same shitty weather no matter what part of the country you are in.
