Probably the wings falling off of our older fighters the F-35 isn't replacing. Beyond that I don't have an answer for you.

That would change if anyone actually caught up to us. So we have to keep moving forward.

Well done, you just recited almost perfectly the excuse the military industrial complex has been using to fleece American taxpayers of trillions of dollars for half a century. You're a very good puppy, now take a bow, kiss the flag and give us a rousing chorus of the Star Spangled Banner and then I think we're about done here.

So you think we shouldn't make more advanced fighters? The world of fighter jets peaked with the F-15?

First of all lets not pretend that a 'generation' of fighters just starts and stops when they start rolling off the production line. A fighter on release is basically a different plane to the version in service when it is taken out of service. Obviously there's a point where a new plane is required, but for many years America has been sinking absolutely mind numbing sums of money into a race that it has more than comfortably led at every step. Ok, as a strategy to end the cold war by pricing Russia out of the game, that might have been successful, but who exactly is it that is nipping at your heels since then?

The likes of Russia and China don't want to be spending those kinds of figures trying to overtake America, they're forced to spend to ensure they don't fall too far behind, and then America uses that as the excuse for yet more spending. You spend at basically war levels and claim its to prevent a war. Do you not see the absolute madness in that kind of thinking? This at the same time that money apparently has to be stripped from programs to help the poor and needy because America is broke.

The budget would actually be in pretty good shape right now if it wasn't for the Bush tax cuts and the Iraq war. We can have our cake and fighter jets too.

You can't build a new generation of jet fighters without any shepherds to bomb with them. That would be criminally wasteful.

It would. But thankfully, they seem to be respawning much faster than we're killing them. If real life war were a video game, people would be crying about the US spawn camping and pwning with vehicles.

No, it wouldn't, the fundamental problem is that people are living longer and not retiring later, and that expensive yet effective medical treatments have been developed, and everyone under medicare is eligible for them. These programs are going to grow out of control unless reigned in somewhat.

Medicare is an extremely inefficient system. If we switched to something like vouchers, we could improve the efficiency without really reducing the efficacy. The prescription drug benefit is exhibit A of this.

So you're saying we should be using the new generation of planes to bomb Florida?

This answer is a lot like your one to pchang about incorporating overseas. It misses the point.

Hmmm, are you just selecting from canned answers and hoping they apply?
