here's electoral calculus and their predictions based on february polls.

the striking thing here is that they predict UKIP will get 14.3% of the vote and that the greens will get 6.5% of it, and guess how many MPs they will have...wait for it...two - yes that's right, one each. 20.8% of the electorate represented by two MPs, in a 650 member house.

Aw quit your whining about PR, the public got a chance to vote for a type of it and didn't want it...

That's one of the things I'm most looking forward to - all those Ukippers waking up after the election realising they completely wasted their votes!

alternative vote is not proportional.

i think i'll blame spineless lib dems who should have insisted on it as a condition of coalition, and instead allowed themselves to be fobbed off with a 'miserable compromise'.

yeah that's true, but as i've said in this thread and before the real problem was that no one really wanted AV, so for the campaign for it was half-hearted, whereas those on the no side were dead set against it. well that and the fact it became a referendum on nick clegg. hopefully the absurdity of the result, over 1/5th of voters being represented by 2 MPs (i actually think it won't come to that - UKIP will take about half a dozen and the greens two), will force some changes. i'm not holding my breath though...

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm hoping for a maximal share of the vote for both UKIP and the Greens with a minimal return of seats just to ram that point home.

My prediction for UKIP is one seat (Carswell keeping his), and Green one seat (Lucas keeping hers - as long as she's not too badly destabilised by the shambles of the Green city council in Brighton.

Also, no one batted an eyelid after the Liberal SDP Alliance amassed 25% of the vote and only 23 seats, instead of a proportional 162.5...

I see no attraction in that. If you want to make government more proportional, then change to a proportional system that affects either the lower house or both houses, not just the upper house.

Because the influence of the upper house just isn't strong enough for it to be a real exercise in proportional representation. If we're going to go that way, then let's do it in the place that actually matters and not just provide a convenient excuse for unbalance in the lower house.
