  • Tell me my writing sucks!

After reading it, that is. I've been writing, and writing, and writing, for ten years now. A thousand or more pages later, I'm satisfied with none of it, but there's nobody I know in-person to critique me; I write exclusively speculative fiction, and every writing group I can find on the Eastern Shore is primarily into detective novels, devotional literature, realistic contemporary fiction . . . stuff I would never write, and avoid like the plague. I take an excerpt to these groups, and get comments like, "it's well-written, but I have no idea what the hell is going on."

IIRC, I floated the idea of a Poly Writer's group about two years ago. I had some people offer to read my work, no interest in a group as such, so I just dropped the idea. Anybody want to read an excerpt? I've written about thirty-five pages (12pt doublespace) of an epistolary SF novel. I don't expect anyone to sit down and read thirty-five damn pages, but I can send as big a chunk as your goodwill can handle. Or I can send the whole wad and you read as much as you feel like before you get bored and go back to porn. Whichever. PM me an e-mail address if you're interested. Or just tell me if you know of an online WG for SF.

Also, I'm looking for some sort of portable writing device for when my PC is inaccessible, which happens annoyingly often. My criteria are:
    • Cheap (no Surface Pro 3, no matter what the commercials sing)
    • Won't break right away
    • Can run Word or OpenOffice
    • Some sort of keyboard, onscreen or real
    • Has USB port
    • Plugs in or has long-lasting battery

Everything else is totally optional. Even internet access is more of a downside, since the possibility for distraction would outweigh the quick research opportunities. I have never owned an iWhatever or laptop, so I don't really know what's good. Any advice?

I suggest looking into a netbook. They didn't really catch on and the iPad pretty much crushed them. But for what you are looking for, they are probably the best. Otherwise, if you have a tablet already, you can just get a portable keyboard.

I recently resolved to be published before my 30th birthday. That's 10 months away, so my chances aren't exactly good, but I'm gonna give it a shot. (Get a short story published, that is.) So, yeah, I'd be up for a writing group type thing. Barring that, I'd totally be willing to read stuff. And I don't go back to school until the end of January, so I do currently have free time.

Elok, it sounds like a description of the Surface Pro 2. Can't speak to reliability, but they come with actual MS Office preloaded, have good battery life, come bundled with a soft keyboard and USB port, and are still available pretty cheap.

I'm guessing we would actually end up as "writing buddies" or something, since I don't know of any other aspiring authors on here. But that's cool with me. Is your FDA address still good? Mine hasn't changed in ten years, if you wanna send me something first.

Starts at $250 used, 350 new, and has a number of features I don't need. Even 32GB is a lot of excess storage for my purposes. I was originally considering a refurbished ancient laptop from Amazon for a hundred, until I saw all the "this damn thing came broken/broke in a week" reviews. Is there any middle ground? I'm guessing no.

Given your modest list of requirements, there's no current machine I'm aware of that won't have a ton of extra stuff. I suggest not going with 'ancient' but rather investing in something relatively up to date. But that's just me -- I prefer new and warrantied.

I know the Surface stuff hasn't gotten the best reviews, but the keyboard options, USB access, and having MS Word pre-loaded is compelling if writing is all you really *need* it for.

The next few days are a great time to sample things if there's a computer retailer near you. Even an hour at Best Buy can be very instructive.
