The nhtsa guesses that those cameras will save about 60 lives a year at a cost of 150$ per vehicle. There are about 15 million new vehicles sold every year in the US, meaning that this measure will cost about 2.25 billion dollars per year. That's about 34 million dollars per life saved, a pretty expensive way to save lives. ****ing stupid rule...

You'd have to take into account non life threatening injuries as well, I guess, and insurance savings from avoided accidents, but still, yeah, seems like a silly law.

I also think that regulators proposing laws generally overstate the benefits and understate the costs...

            $150 per car seems low.

Similar to hysteria on hot car deaths from recently. On average 40 children a year in the us are killed by being forgotten in the car. Proposed safety measures might cut those numbers in half. How cheap would the measures need to be to make them worthwhile? Is this really the type of thing that makes sense for people to get into a frenzy about? But some woman whose child died that way will get on TV and start sobbing, and who knows what will happen...

Then again, USD 150 over the price of a vehicle is a pretty negligible cost - On a month in which I go visit my in-laws, I spend that much on fuel alone.

Of course, the camera is a bit overkill - won't proximity sensors still achieve pretty much the same thing? Why are they expecting that people who don't watch the rearview mirrors / look back while reversing will pay attention to the camera (besides lol it's a screen LOL)?

The car already has a sensor, the Mk. I Eyeball + a mirror.

I'm all for a device to keep my car cool while parked in the sun... nevermind if there's a kid inside If the law can mean we'll get the equipment cheaper due to the much increased manufacturing volume, who am I to complain?

Yeah, that's what I mean. Most parking sensors are sensitive enough to detect a person (at least all that I have tried and have had a person walk right behind the car), so if you still wanted something extra, I'm not sure why not settle with that (and most new cars already come with those, so the cost impact would be much lower)...

I wonder what the cost-benefit of seatbelts is.

                              Very probably very highly positive.

They cost like $5 and turn fatal accidents into minor inconveniences.
