At tonight's Flyers vs. Penguins gave, Oh Canada was sung in solidarity with us. Classy.

Kevin Vickers, the Sargent-at-Arms of Parliament, killed the assailant with a 9mm pistol kept in a lock box in his office. 3 clean shots. Coincidentally, the S-a-A besides being a ceremonial position, is also chief of security on the Hill. Obviously the right man for the job.

When I first heard he'd saved the day I was hoping he'd killed the dude with that big gold mace, alas.

Indeed. I thought of the gravity hammer from halo 3....never take a shotgun up against a gravity hammer.

This appears to be another victory for the doctrine of aggressive response to active shooters. Lingering and setting up a perimeter leads to further deaths. Aggressively pursuing the attacker and ending the situation as quickly as possible reduces the time a shooter has to find and kill victims. Cops are generally better trained and more able than their adversaries; even an evenly matched force of police prevails in the vast majority of cases.

Give cops the chance to be heroes; train them to act quickly and decisively, and end things with as little damage as possible.

The energy sword on the other hand is actually quite beatable with a shotgun, if you get the timing right.

The man himself, in ceremonial garb and everything. Please tell me he was wearing the hat when he shot the guy.

The assailant, fortunately, was unaware he was meters (yards) away from the PM - other side of a closed door in caucus with most of his Cabinet ministers. Another closed door he ran by was to a room the Leader of the Opposition was in with many of his MPs. Aggressive response was a very good idea, in this case.
