  • Considering there were only 5 people who died that year according to that article, I'd say there isn't much need for an entire system designed for these people. More people die from exposure than that every year who aren't even homeless.

I wonder why someone might choose not to spend nights in shelters..

When there are homeless shelters why do homeless people sleep outside?

I spent a lot of the time when I was homeless sleeping "in the rough" which is another way of saying outdoors. I've been asked a lot of times why I didn't just stay in homeless shelters. The two answers many homed people often give as to why homeless people don't use shelters is that either such people are drug users and drug use is against homeless shelter rules or that some people refuse to follow rules pertaining to check in and checkout.

The issue is pretty complex, but no, I was neither using drugs nor too defiant to obey the rules. I'd like to give my reasons for sleeping in the rough and also some of the reasons I've seen others avoid shelters while exposing some common homeless shelter dangers. Some of these reasons might surprise you. I know I was shocked to discover a few myself.

        - Fear of Contracting Parasites
        - Hours of Operation Incompatible with Work Hours
        - Danger of Rape or Assault
        - Fear of Contracting Disease
        - Lack of Handicapped Accommodations
        - An Invasive and Disrespectful Check in Process
        - Drug Addictions
        - Separation of Family Members
        - Some Service Dogs are Barred from Entry
        - Staff Assumptions about Drug Use and Criminality
        - Danger of Theft
        - Religious Differences
        - Lack of Privacy and Fear of Crowds
        - Lack of Control
        - Lack of Nonthreatening Rules for Accommodating Disabled Individuals

        - And the #1 Reason Homeless People Don't Use Shelters- Lack of Available Beds
There is not enough shelter for everyone

Incidentally I cut it down to just a list rather than the explanations for each. Perhaps if you could put down your copy of Ayn Rand for 5 minutes and experiment with being a decent human being by reading the link, you might actually learn something.

WEEK ffs, not year. Learn to read.

As parts of the country have experienced deep cold snaps this winter, homeless lives have been at risk, and last week’s deaths came after several died from the cold earlier in the month.

          • I'm not sure how any of this changes the fact that government run programs aren't going to solve the problem. The main problem is that these people are homeless in the first place. That can be traced back to poor economic policies, mental issues, and other problems outside the control of any group or entity. No system will ever be perfect, and not everyone can be saved. Emotional decision makers like yourself thankfully don't make it far in the private sector. On the other hand, the public sector is just rife with them and that's why they are corrupt and inefficient.

You also still haven't answered what is your obsession with the US when your own insignificant island seems to have its own problems. If the US were such a horrible place then we wouldn't have the immigration problems we have right now. I don't see the UK with immigration problems or people flooding into it. The fact is that emotional decisions ultimately end up hurting more people than helping. You are not a rational person.

Oh, socialists are people who think it's immoral to let sick people die if they can't afford their treatments? Are you trying to make socialism look good?

What are you talking about? You don't want there to be a system at all. You've outed yourself many times as a survival of the fittest, **** the weak and needy type *******. You're also the same kind of little ***** who'll be the first to come crying when life ****s on your cereal badly, and you suddenly realize leaving people to fend for themselves is stupid, primitive and callous.

                • You sound like you have emotional problems. You fly off the handle easily and you are absolutely obsessed with trying to find problems with the US. Stop projecting your own deficiencies and inadequacies on the rest of us please. You are not a savior of anyone and you have not accomplished anything. You're just another whiny liberal who screams up and down about the way the world should be and then turns to government to magically solve it. If you had any talent at all then you'd innovate and invent your way to your ideal world. There's a big difference between those who are analytic and those who are not, and I think we both know which category you fall into.

                  • You're exactly the kind of sad ******* who boasts about how many pushups he can do, in between browsing pickup artists forums and telling lies about people and communities you know absolutel nothing about. One day you're going to wind up being a manager or business owner of some irrelevant product no-one gives a **** about, boring everyone you meet with tedious tales of your imagined successes. Meanwhile you'll have a wife at home who hates you, kids who just wish you'd die already and a group of 'friends' who wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire who you routinely bore stupid with lies about the secretary you've been ****ing.

Nothing about you is in any way interesting or not pathetic.

that's quite amusing because not one thing you've posted here can be described as a rational argument. it's just bald assertion on top of bald assertion.

                      • Looks like we're getting closer to what you really are. I'm going to guess you have issues with depression. Guys like you tend to try and play hero and come off like they want to save the world in order to fulfill their own needs. At the end of the day you aren't really doing anything other than to try and satisfy your own selfish emotional needs. It's easy for you to say that everyone around you just doesn't really care, and just doesn't understand, all the while you outsource everything to that big organization that will make everything right for you. When we get right down to it, what do you really have to offer? We probably wouldn't even be having a conversation right now if there were really any substance to you.

                        • Emotionally incapable man-children like yourself aren't a new phenomena. You have nothing to offer the world beyond an endless narcissistic droning that attempts to make up for the fact that no-one in real life actually likes you. Maybe if you put more work into not being a complete douche, you might stop being a dismal failure at anything a normal human would consider life.

                          Just a little free advice.

Apparently I do have something to offer the world since I can pretty much walk into any corporation and have a job. As far as being a man-child, I don't think you understand what that word means. So I'll give you a little free advice of my own: Get in control of yourself because I haven't seen too many posters on here fly off the hook like you do. You are clearly overly emotional and appear to have little to offer. Maybe instead of worrying about the US all the time you should focus on yourself and that insignificant island you call your homeland.
