and how do you apply such a spiritual conception to the real world? or do you think that freedom is in fact only an internal matter and not something which acts upon the outside and others?

The idea is that the main purpose of life is to improve your virtues through physical and intellectual exercises. If you do so properly, you will "calibrate" yourself so that your connection with the rest of the world should not be something to worry about. It will come naturally.

You can trust your virtues. Proper thinking and action will follow from their nurturing.

Freedom can have any number of meanings, which makes it very useful for equivocation and as a buzzword or rallying point. We can all like freedom even if we have totally different ideas of what it is.

EDIT: Note that, for example, if you're pro-gun, you want to be free to protect yourself, hunt, feel safe against hypothetical tyrants, etc. If you're anti-gun, you want to be free from anxiety about armed lunatics and such. Either way, you're pro-freedom.

Or, if that doesn't work for you, freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. As good a definition as any, I guess.

Perhaps, but it's better to be safe than sorry. For example, I was breaking into someone's house last night and noticed that he has a handgun in his cabinet. So now I'm learning how to use it so that that the next time I break in, I'll be prepared.
