  • States That Raised Minimum Wage See Faster Job Growth, Report Says

I generally don't support increases in the minimum wage believing it just prices low skill workers out of the market and decrease job opportunities but maybe the effect is less than we thought, at least at the margins, or that other economic forces can have a greater effect. This is certainly an interesting development worthy of more research.

New data released by the Department of Labor suggests that raising the minimum wage in some states might have spurred job growth, contrary to what critics said would happen.
In a report on Friday, the 13 states that raised their minimum wages on Jan. 1 have added jobs at a faster pace than those that did not. The data run counter to a Congressional Budget Report in February that said raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, as the White House supports, would cost 500,000 jobs.
"In the 13 states that boosted their minimums at the beginning of the year, the number of jobs grew an average of 0.85 percent from January through June. The average for the other 37 states was 0.61 percent.

"Nine of the 13 states increased their minimum wages automatically in line with inflation: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont and Washington. Four more states — Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island — approved legislation mandating the increases."
The 13 states that lifted their minimum wage levels on Jan. 1 experienced added jobs at a faster pace than the 37 states that kept wage levels steady.

**** statistic. What was the growth rate in these states prior to the minimum wage increase?

Hi guise, it's AAHZ here (lol.)

I just wanted to thank Oerdin for giving me this thrade to one-star. It takes a lot of hard work and effort to one-star an Oerdin-Thrade™ and I feel like I accomplished something important by doing so.

People come out with all kinds of doomsday scenarios in their minds, whenever minimum wage is increased.

The truth is the data seems to show the effect is small either way as long as the increase is relatively small; either a small plus to the economy or a small drag on the economy.

Are you saying that removing minimum wage would be akin to raising it to several hundred thousand dollars per month?

I have no issues with it, then.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Let's keep the minimum wage as low as possible, to keep the maximum number of working poor families on welfare.

Our economy is based upon people spending money. When they have more to spend, there is more economic activity.

I have no problem with raising the min wage as long as there is an exception for teenagers.
They're the one most likely not to be hired if wages are higher and we need to do everything we can to get them jobs and keep them off the streets and out of trouble.

I think xbox does more towards keeping teens "off the streets" than anything else.

Don't most teenagers already have one or another gaming box?
