That's why many of us don't take it particularly seriously when some Muslim women come out and tell us it's all their own choice. Maybe in a tiny number of cases that is true, but for the large part it's a control forced onto women by their families and communities.

One of Mohammed's early followers was a woman warrior- let's just try to imagine her fighting usefully clad in a tent. The veil for women is common to a few cultures- pre-Islamic Iran, Byzantium, Assyria and various Jewish cultures and is also worn by male Tuaregs but not by the women.
