That's why many of us don't take it particularly seriously when some Muslim women come out and tell us it's all their own choice. Maybe in a tiny number of cases that is true, but for the large part it's a control forced onto women by their families and communities.

There are many women in Philadelphia (almost always Black) who are Muslim converts (so their own choice!) and wear full garb.

You live in a country where you're free to get murdered at a horribly inflated rate, free to suffer without decent healthcare, free to watch blacks get sent to prison in staggeringly unrepresentative numbers, free to have kids and soldiers funerals picketed by raving mobs, and of course free to have all your communications spied on (along with the rest of the worlds) by your intelligence agencies.

One of Mohammed's early followers was a woman warrior- let's just try to imagine her fighting usefully clad in a tent. The veil for women is common to a few cultures- pre-Islamic Iran, Byzantium, Assyria and various Jewish cultures and is also worn by male Tuaregs but not by the women.

It's more to do with male control of public space, and also class divisions.
