I'd argue that composting paper products is probably better than trying to recycle them. Recycling usually involves a lot of harsh chemicals and the unavoidable emissions caused by picking up and transporting paper in trucks. Composting can be done in your backyard, it requires no chemicals, and it helps restore nutrients to the soil.
The catch is that paper needs to be mixed with other, richer wastes before it can be made into useful compost. But there's no shortage of food scraps in modern society, so that's not really such an issue.John Brown did nothing wrong.
