  • Putin in Shanghai

Russia's President Vladimir Putin agrees a multi-billion dollar, 30-year gas deal with China at a summit between the two in Shanghai.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has signed a multi-billion dollar, 30-year gas deal with China.

The deal between Russia's Gazprom and China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) has been 10 years in the making.

Russia has been keen to find an alternative energy market for its gas as it faces the possibility of European sanctions over the crisis in Ukraine.

No official price has been given but it is estimated to be worth over $400bn.

President Putin said in a statement to the Russian news channel Rossiya: "The price is satisfactory for both sides.

I'm picturing a goofy 80's montage of Putin gallivanting around Shanghai. "Putin Goes To Shanghai!"

China is very good at bargaining. Russia will get money, but after the costs of production and building the pipeline, their profit will be negligible.

It's Putin's way of saying FU to the US. He is hoping that if China becomes a big enough pain our ass, we will be too busy to worry about what he is doing to reform the USSR.

Russia does get some infrastructure development out of the Chinese (basically the pipeline and a road along the pipeline) but it isn't a great deal for Russia. Yes, it gets a new gas field developed but it also is basically giving away the gas for free so it is hard to say this is a good deal for Russia.

I know the neo-Dictator is desperate to show he still has options given his recent monstrous screw up in the Ukraine which has single handedly plunged Russia back into recession but surely even he could have done better than giving away gas for free? Of course, maybe he wants to follow the old Russia trick of signing contracts then later breaking them when ever he feels like it. That's what he has repeatedly done with signed gas contracts in the past so why not now? Naturally, it also makes Russia look extremely bad, that their word cannot be trusted and is worthless.

Odd. One night in Bangkok is supposed to make a hard man humble. Not Shanghai.

If he's trying to form some sort of alliance or at least partnership with China then he's definitely just agreed to be the junior member.
