    Good catch.

So, I believe there is an important difference between acts perpetrated by Christians and acts perpetrated by the Christian Church.

For example, inquisitors were acting under the legitimate authority of the Catholic Church, and they did some pretty terrible things.

I mean "Christian Church" only in the sense that there are recognized, legitimate authorities of Christianity. The Catholic Church is one such authority. Any religion that has an apparatus of authority can be said to have a "church."

              There's nothing legitimate about catholicism.

The Catholic Church is the legitimate authority of Catholicism, pretty much by definition. You can argue that it's not the legitimate authority of Christianity, but it is a recognized authority of Christianity.

Agree. And this is the limit of their "legitimacy" WRT Christianity.

The bad mouthing starts in the New Testament. Crucifixion was nto a Jewish form of execution- stoning, beheading yes.

The sheer amount of effort put into denigrating Jews and Judaism by Christians, Christian thinkers, Christian rulers and official Christian bodies could have been better spent on living a better 'Christian' life.

Yes, all of that is true. Regardless, the Holocaust was perpetrated by Hitler and the Nazis, not Christianity.

You should read Hitler's Pope and learn about how the Catholic Church aided and abetted the holocaust not to mention how various protestant denominations also helped aid and abet the holocaust. It wasn't just the secular authorities. Oh, and we must not forget the various Orthodoxed church leaders in eastern Europe who helped out both by urging their followers to assist the Nazis and by helping to identify Jews just like Muslim officials in North Africa and SE Europe (especially Bosnians) not only helped but actively recruited members for units to help the SS. Hell, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem was an out and out Nazi supporting bigot.

You're an idiot. The Catholic Church (and Karol Jozef Wojtyla, later Pope JPII in particular) was deeply involved in protecting the Jews during the Holocaust. A huge number of Catholic clergymen are recognized as Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem.

If we want to demarcate groups why not blame the holocaust on 'Germans', 'whites' or some other grouping that includes a majority of people who weren't Nazis but did influence their thinking. It can be done, but the value is rather diluted.
