Never played Ultima. But I threw in some money to Lord British's new game, as I'd like to see what all the fuzz is about.Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.-Isaiah 41:10
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made - Psalms 139.14a

I liked the early Ultimas (not sure which #s) on NES too.
I really liked VI on PC ... you could put everything in the kingdom but Lord British into one chest, including the bodies of all your slain opponents/allies. Then open the chest and all the rest of the non-movable objects would disappear throughout most of the kingdom. I mean, really ... a game about the Avatar of Virtue that lets you pick up and carry the corpses of your opponents and dump them in chests ... how is this not the greatest game ever?
You could steal cannons from the guards and then use them to kill a never ending stream of guards. Lord British was fine with this, since after all you're the Avatar and must be very virtuous! Of course you could attack Lord British but at least in my version of the game he was invincible. I fought a running battle with him for several hours with a cannon once. Crossed and recrossed the continent several times. Guy could really take a cannonball ... or 500 of them ... and just shrug it off. I tried all the tricks ... glass swords, ship cannons ... I never was able to kill him.
VII was ok, but you couldn't put everyone into a single chest, so it felt much less virtuous to me.
Ultima Online was perhaps the greatest MMORPG of all time. A bunch of death-robe mages running around nuking everyone in vast suburbs that popped up everywhere.

I remember playing Ultima Exodus on the NES as a kid. My sister and I would write diaries for each of our characters. Sick, sick stuff.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”
"Capitalism ho!"
