Well, that's because it is bad fanfiction. Though I don't know if there is good fanfiction, and yes that includes the Ender Wiggin/Harry Potter crossover.

As opposed to all those other high powered women of African origin in the shows at that time ? Of course, I forget, you weren't even a fart at the time, let alone the result of a 9 months long constipation.

I've met Ms. Nichols. Very charming she is too. She remembers it slightly differently from you :

[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNTSV4Eh0R4](Video Link)Nichelle Nichols played Nyota Uhura on Star Trek. She didn't like television work and wanted to get back to the theater. So she told the producer, Gene Roddenberry, that she planned to leave the show after the first season. He begged her to take the weekend to reconsider. She agreed. Later, Nichols attended a fundraiser. Martin Luther King, Jr. was there. He approached her and expressed that he was a huge fan of her work. When she informed him that h...

Not mine. A high profile African woman, a high profile Russian and a high profile Asian of Japanese origin all on the bridge of a starship. You might want to read some of the standard science fiction works of the time, and what someone such as Samuel R. Delany has to say about them.

It was a mighty white world out there... in outer space.

I have watched it many, many times. On television, video, youtube, the Gold Key series, the cartoon in the 70s... more teaching egg-sucking....

Gosh, what might have changed in the intervening 50 years, with regards to roles for women, DIMBOT ?

Ms. Nichols would never have been mistaken for Puerto Rican. Her character was meant to be African, and not some stroppy pouty centrefold who threatens a hissy fit if she can't get on the same starship as her boyfriend.
Next time, try writing an actual response to HC's point instead of engaging in public autofellatio. Nobody cares if you've met the actress, or what obscure book you've read, because if you've actually seen the show you'd know that Uhura's role is flatter than Kansas. You haven't actually addressed his point, which is that while her role on television was groundbreaking for black women its importance to the show itself was minimal. This is to the surprise of presumably no-one since you never address anyone's point, just play up your own irrelevant bona fides while slinging around pathetic insults from the kindergarten playground.

        • FWIW, if you compare the production and FX of Trek TOS to its TV contemporaries (Lost in Space, Land of the Giants), it wasn't bad. Especially if you compare it to, say, the Dr. Who style of that era (from which we in the US were thankfully spared).

Re Star Wars ep7: I have very little interest in these artificial reboots and re-imaginings. It's all just franchise extension. Fortunately, the purveyors of these properties don't have to care, as I'm no longer part of their demographic target. And I'm fine with that. The presence of Han, Leia, and Luke is unlikely to move me beyond waiting for the movie to become available for free in my home. In the unlikely case that the reviews are amazing, I may go as a date night with my wife.

Oh, and agreed that JJ Abrams is a hack. A flashy one, but a hack nonetheless.

Bottom line: I watched TOS in grade school and saw Star Wars while in college. This discussion just makes me feel old.

I saw some of the earliest Hartnell Who for the first time a few months ago, and I was actually impressed with how hard they tried to make what they considered a children's show good.

            • Looking back at the original trilogy, it's hard to put my finger on what exactly made it so special. Partly it was just the groundbreaking FX, yes, but it was also the funky way they threw together elements from every kind of old action show and made something distinctive and unique out of them--something that actually "worked," most of the time, in spite of its motley origins. That, and they actually knew how to do cool character designs back then.

With that said, there are definitely spots that are best viewed as a ten-year-old. Like Luke's final battle with Vader. He looks ridiculous, like a badly-controlled muppet. Come to think of it, most of ROTJ has series issues, if viewed sans rose-colored spectacles. The Ewoks, for example.

              • Everything about it.

Where did the stick up Luke's butt come from in that? It wasn't the same personality he had in the previous, much better, films, and I never bought it as an evolution of the real Luke. I think if Space Hitler was my dad and a total stranger who killed my mentor, I wouldn't start calling him "Father" the next time we met.

The trees of Endor were pretty, though. I'll give it that much.

                  • Don't get me wrong, the original trilogy is among my favorite movies of all time. But a good chunk of Empire and RotJ are unwatchable for me. Every Dagobah. It's just lame. I hate it. Yoga isn't charming or fun. He's annoying and unwatchable. I forgot what a tired old sack he was.

The first part of Jedi, up to the Sarlaac pit, just sucks horrible balls. You are the ****ing rebellion. You destroyed the death star. But some key member gets kidnapped and you don't respond? And then a few others get involved, risking their own lives, and still you just stand by. I mean, send one Calamari cruiser in orbit around Tatooine to shake up the Huns. Do something!

                    And then ewoks. Lame.

The battles in RotJ are fun at the end. After the explosions stop, the movie needs to... because the new version there's partying on all the worlds from the newer movies... edited in. And they removed the original Vader from the end when they are all ghosts:

                    Spoiler:
Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker dies after saving Luke from the Emperor. Apparently, a genocidal maniac who murders "younglings" has a change of heart. Wow... the entire six movies... all depended upon that moment. That's awful.

I consider Empire my favorite, but the first movie is definitely the most watchable. For me, only some of the beginning Tatooine scenes suck. Now that I think about it, I hate Tatooine. The only Tatooine scene I don't hate is when Luke Skywalker watches the two suns set to the "Skywalker Ballad".

I did. Perhaps you're simply unable to think of anything I do without construing some sexual element- BIG NEWS, DIPSH!T-

I'm just not that into you.

Nobody cares if you've met the actress
Really ? That's nice dear. Have another nap. Have another opinion, for all I care.

or what obscure book you've read,
Another one of those you won't have read then- pity, because it's all about the roles that black actors were given (maids, gardeners, menials) routinely in Hollywood, the theatre and television.

because if you've actually seen the show
That's a great joke. It shows you do have a sense of humour after all.

Well, a deliberate one that is.

you'd know that Uhura's role is flatter than Kansas.
As opposed to what ? All those other high-ranking important women in Star Fleet then ?

Yeoman 'Fetch the tea' Rand, for instance ?

which is that while her role on television was groundbreaking for black women its importance to the show itself was minimal.
You won't remember the Sixties, because you too were not yet even a nasty whiff of flatulence, let alone a fully formed brain dead faecal clot, but having an African woman, a DARK SKINNED African woman at that, as communications officer on an interstellar spacecraft meant a whole big deal then.

                            But look who I'm addressing.
