I didn't post this to get people to sign some Change.org petition. The article I ran across just happened to want people to do that. I posted it because, well, wow. That said, I don't expect the petitioners expect the militants to do something, but they might expect the Nigerian government to.
So, the gummint will ignore terrorists kidnapping hundreds of people at a time, but a petition signed by random people in another country will get them moving on it? I had heard of this, as it happens--Boko Haram has been doing this kind of thing for a long time, and the government isn't trying to stop them here because it's learned that it can't. IIRC BH essentially owns the northern regions of the country.
There's also some kind of Muslim-Christian civil war going on in the CAR, I think, and IMO that's much worse. That's been under the radar too, and probably sundry other atrocities that haven't been reported at all.

A plane with 200-ish people on it goes missing over the Indian ocean, and the world organizes the largest recovery effort ever. A ferry with 200-ish kids sinks in South Korea, and it's a worldwide news story. 200-ish young women are abducted from a physics test in Nigeria, and...?

It's a crazy place from what I can gather. I've worked in many countries and I think that if I was offered Nigeria I'd have to refuse. The place just scares me...

I don't think there's necessarily a good solution, but when has that ever stopped the world from responding? I mean, look at the Ukraine. Obama keeps going on about how there will be consequences and all that jazz, and Putin's response is--correct me if I'm wrong--going on shirtless horse rides. And yet Obama keeps bleating.
