The first material called "duck tape" was long strips of plain cotton duck cloth used in making shoes stronger, for decoration on clothing, and for wrapping steel cables or electrical conductors to protect them from corrosion or wear.
... and it had nothing to do with "ducts"
"Duct" tape came about much later... as knockoffs tried to get into the action.
Originally posted by wikiAfter the war, the duck tape product was sold in hardware stores for household repairs. The Melvin A. Anderson Company of Cleveland, Ohio, acquired the rights to the tape in 1950.[14] It was commonly used in construction to wrap air ducts.[18] Following this application, the name "duct tape" came into use in the 1950s, along with tape products that were colored silvery gray like tin ductwork. Specialized heat- and cold-resistant tapes were developed for heating and air-conditioning ducts. To us, it is the BEAST.

Why? Why not stop being wrong, instead?

There's no shame in realigning to be more compatible with reality.
But I wouldn't worry about it.
You weren't wrong... necessarily. "Duck tape" is now a brand name. "Duct tape" does accurately describe the products in question.
It's just... "Duck tape" was the original name... then it became a brand. Often times, the product comes first, then a brand name becomes popular and used interchangeably. To us, it is the BEAST.

I was responding more towards what seems like the most common points of contention in the 'duck v duct' debateTo us, it is the BEAST.
