Call To Power 2 Cradle 3+ mod in progress: https://apolyton.net/forum/other-games/call-to-power-2/ctp2-creation/9437883-making-cradle-3-fully-compatible-with-the-apolyton-edition
Hey Aeson - I see you've been accepted at self's poly down group and the Wiglaf Appreciation Group. Don't forget to post something flacking your official 'poly page... Crosslinks +FB = SEO.
Having thought it over, I think "the great mistake" must be referring to Civ V ... now an exodus of civ players' only hope is to start fresh on a new world ...
So - Guy, Lori and Aeson have mentioned an intention to play them some SMACX in the wake of the BE news, and you know that means more just haven't said... Anyone have anything to report?
I'd point out a few things for them as are trying AC for the first time/returning after a decade/never played it a lot in the first place.
1) There's an excellent resource right here at 'poly for new/returning SMACers http://apolyton.net/forumdisplay.php/23-Alpha-Centauri -A subforum with info stretching back to the dawn of time on most anything AC - Aeson is interested in reviving it, in fact, and I don't think it would take a huge push; just a patient one. A mountain of content and a lot of lurkers w/ frequent newbs who just need encouragement and someone to talk to are plenty to work with, if an effort was made and had youse guys' support. Go ask those newb questions. Post about your games or whatever. Everybody wins.
2) The most common complaint I hear against SMACX from CIVilians is the maps are retina-burning. Leaving aside that objecting to designing an alien world to look alien is moronic, there is wgabrie's Graphics terrain mod linked in the FAQ thread, and I can point you at a couple of very earthlike ones I made, if that won't do.
So anything to report? How's the SMACin' treatin' ya?
I played SMAC a very little bit some time after it came out, but this is the first time I'm really giving it a try. There's definitely a lot to like about the atmosphere and personality of the game, but at times it's tough going when I remember that certain features I'm used to in civ games hadn't been introduced yet. I found the same to be true on the couple occasions I went back to Civ2.
