I don't see any non-religious motivations to be valid here. You can see it in this thread, plenty of atheistic folk asking what's the big deal, the person is dead.

Because that's how humans are able to live in very large groups among other very large groups without killing one another.
But large groups usually don't mind killing other large groups if it gets them a benefit.

Indeed, but the physical remains are treated as holy by religious faith because of the notion that their life continues in one form or another. There is always a service of remembrance, but the treating of physical remains as something more than simply material to return to the Earth has religious undertones - it is treated with a form of sacredness.

It takes more energy to burn a human to ash than you could ever get out of it. In addition to being gross and inappropriate, it is also an inefficient use of resources.

Bull. It is an excellent and efficient way to dispose of medical waste which is all this is.

Cremating human remains is an efficient means of disposal. It is an inefficient means of power generation. In addition to being abhorrent. I swear most of you people would be happily in line a Soylent Green Restaurant.

Religious undertones maybe, in my mind it reflects far more that people cope with the tangible (remains) far more easily than the intangible (nothingness).

It's true. A lot of people in this thread have killed 6 million Jews.

                      • Keep in mind that the aborted foetuses that we are talking about are likely to be only a few centimetres in size. We are not talking about full gestation stillbirths here. What would people suggest? Little matchbox coffins? Human tissue is often incinerated, with the rest of the medical waste at hospitals, and if this heat is used to generate electricity then that is a good thing.

If you are ok with taking organs from corpses in order to save lives, are you also ok with feeding the non-organ bits to the hungry in order to save their lives?

                              • The idea of trying to generate energy by burning human bodies is absurd. I don't think you'll get a net gain in energy by burning a human body, it's 50 to 60% water. The amount of energy needed to evaporate off that water is far greater than the energy that might be gained by burning the fats, sugars and proteins. Putting fetuses in a "waste to energy" plant would be counter-productive. As a point of fact, the carbon footprint of cremating a human body is actually greater than that of putting it in a casket and burying it. The "green" way of diposing of human remains is to lay it naked in a hole. ( Or if you're too squeamish put in in a biodegradeable bag first. )

Did these people actually take The Matrix seriously? We're just lucky that they didn't try putting the babies in pods with electrodes strapped to them.
