There'll be thousands of humans still alive, living in remote parts of the world or underground. A nuclear war won't make us entirely extinct.

"Thousands" is a pretty small population bottleneck. I think the smallest it's ever been was around 10,000 and that wasn't spread around the surface of the earth in isolated bomb shelters.

Extinction as in the complete eradication of the human species?

Given our global dispersion and adaptability, I don't think anything could cause our complete destruction. As long as there is some semblance of life on earth (water, oxygen, etc.), there will be populations of humans, no matter how small, surviving somehow.

Over the next millennium, as human populations spread beyond this planet, the survivability of our species will increase significantly if only because of greater dispersion.
